The Secret to Writing That Conveys Your 'True Self' Lies in the Back of Your Mind
“I’m such a boring person...”
The other day, a student came to me with this concern...
“When I try to write, I feel like I have nothing to say about myself. Teacher, my writing... it’s dead, isn’t it?”
Even if you are good at writing,
your true self just doesn't 'come out' or you 'can't bring it out...'
The grammar is perfect.
The word choice is meticulous.
The structure is solid.
But something is missing.
“I have the writing skills...
why doesn't it resonate?”
Her struggle,
it was my struggle once, too.
In that moment, I saw my former self.
Back when I was a fledgling magazine editor.
“This article is well-written, but it just doesn't strike a chord...”
If it were today, my senior might have
given me hands-on advice.
But...
publishing houses a while back were
a world of
“learn by watching.”
Bitter memories of being told by my senior
to rewrite things over and over.
That is exactly why I understood
the student's feelings all too well.
What is the 'hidden feeling' that moves hearts?
Actually, writing has
two elements.
The surface feeling
“How I want to be seen”
“How I want to be perceived”
The hidden feeling
"This is what I really think"
"Honestly, this is how I feel"
For example, consider a sentence like this.
"I'm doing my best at my new job!"
It sounds positive on the surface, but underneath...
"Actually, I'm incredibly anxious"
"But I don't want to complain"
These feelings might be hidden there.
4 Tips for Effectively Expressing Your 'Hidden Feelings'
1. Don't be afraid to show your weaknesses or private side
2. Describe specific scenes simply
3. Carefully depict changes in emotion
4. Convey your values and beliefs
There is no such thing as a perfect person.
Instead of performing a 'perfect self,' express your
authentic self.
Sometimes, it is important to share your weaknesses or stories of failure, and
things that are usually private and that you wouldn't tell anyone else, without feeling embarrassed.
When doing so, try to be as specific as possible, while also keeping in mind
simple and clear expressions.
The simpler the writing, the easier it is to
convey.
Avoid complex expressions or difficult words, and try to convey your emotions using
concise language.
By carefully conveying your emotions through anecdotes,
the reader will surely
empathize with your feelings.
For example...
"I was acting cool in front of everyone, but I was so nervous during today's presentation that my hands were shaking. I went to the restroom before the presentation, right? Actually, at that moment, I looked at a photo of my two-year-old daughter and it gave me courage... By promising the photo, 'Daddy's going to do his best,' I was able to see it through to the end."
Here, within a short piece of writing,
the honest feeling of 'being nervous'
the secret episode of a 'promise with a photograph'
the 'concrete description' of a vow made to a photograph
the 'values' of family love
the 'conviction' of a sense of mission toward work
are all firmly depicted.
One final important thing.
There is no need to aim for
perfect writing.
Because your 'true-to-life feelings' are
the most attractive.
After all, readers empathize more with
'ordinary people doing their best' than with 'perfect people'.
Writing that overflows with 'humanity'
moves the reader's heart,
creates empathy,
and has the power to increase your fans.
Try captivating many readers
with your own unique, 'humanity'-filled writing.
Starting today, little by little,
while also letting the 'feelings behind your heart' peek through...
For those who want to end the time spent writing alone and feeling lost
Thank you for reading this far.
In this article, I shared how to think about writing that conveys a sense of warmth. However, what many people stumble over when they actually try it is not the knowledge itself, but
・What should I write about in my own case?
・Is this direction correct?
・If I'm going to make it a paid note, what should I delve deeper into?
・How should I connect X to note?
・I can't keep it up, review it, or judge it on my own.
these parts.
That is why, in my membership,
I have created a place to refine your experiences and thoughts into writing that gets read and sells.
I want to monetize through writing alone. But I can't see the path to monetization.
If you want to grow your note or find your own theme
If you don't want to worry alone and want to work hard to earn income on note with someone else
If that sounds like you, please take a look.
