Change Your Perspective to Make Your Writing "Interesting"
Hello!
This is Shibajun.
Why are textbook passages
so boring?
I'm sure many of you
used textbooks or lectures
as a lullaby back in your student days (lol).
There is a perfectly valid reasonwhytextbook writing is so boring.
Why are textbooks "boring"?
To begin with, what is the purpose of a textbook?
That's right,
"conveying accurate information".
That's why
it inevitably ends up being dry and dull.
But wait a minute!
Is that really the kind of writing
that we want to read?
The pitfall of writing without "my perspective"
For example...
Textbook writing feels like this.
"To improve your writing skills, daily practice is important. You should read high-quality books and develop the habit of organizing your own thoughts."
Hmm... I'm starting to
get sleepy again (lol).
The reason is simple.
It's partly a matter of writing style,
but more than that,
"my perspective"is nowhere to be found.
Flip your perspective 180 degrees!
What readers are really looking for is...
Surprise andyour own unique ideas.
How about trying this
for the opening of that previous passage?
"Writing skills are polished at a late-night bar."
Whoa! That actually sounds intriguing (lol)
“Actually, from the moment you open the door to a bar, you are being tested.”
“Wait, really...?”
But it’s true. Why, you ask?
When you duck into a bar late at night, you need to weave a conversation with a stranger—the bartender—in a short amount of time. During that time, you are...
• Choosing topics that pique the other person's interest
• Expressing yourself concisely, yet memorably
• Developing the conversation while observing the other person's reactions
You are literally utilizing your “writing skills”!
On the “special stage” of a bar,
without even realizing it,
you are honing the art of capturing
the reader’s (the bartender’s) heart.
So, how do you change your “perspective”?
Try questioning what you take for granted.
Try reversing your perspective entirely.
Enjoy unexpected combinations
Try digging up experiences only you have had.
Try changing your viewpoint a little
and expressing it in words.
With a sense of “excitement” and “thrill,”
do a mental handstand (lol),
and practice changing your perspective.
The “interesting” within you
will surely awaken.
