Listening to "FUNNY-BOY" makes even my clumsy youth feel endearing
𓅫⸒⸒ Thank you for coming to Kotori's note ♡
Today, I've prepared my favorite bittersweet
caramel tart and
a cup of dark roast
black coffee.
This combination of sweetness and bitterness
is somehow
perfect for my mood
right now.
This time, I'd like to write about
a song by BOØWY called
"FUNNY-BOY."
While I was tidying up my closet,
a CD I used to listen to a lot
popped out.
Back then, I would sit in front of
my CD boombox, staring intently
at the lyric card, and that time
suddenly felt nostalgic,
so I played it for the first time in a while.
🌆 The pretense hidden in a gray city
The moment I heard the intro
flowing from the speakers after all this time,
my chest felt a sharp pang of longing.
Looking closely at the lyrics,
the words "someday I'll be dyed by the gray city"
remain deep within my heart
even now.
When I was young, I felt a strong longing
for the adult world that seemed to be dyed
in the colors of the city, and an equal amount
of fear toward it.
I can't help but find my younger self,
who was desperately trying to act older
to fit into that gray city,
very endearing.
I can't explain it well, but
at the time, I believed that that coldness
was what made you cool.
But looking back on it now,
perhaps it was just a clumsy
show of bravado.
🥀 The season I pushed away because I didn't want to get hurt
What is depicted in this song is
the image of two people who cannot be honest
with each other and are pretending
to be somewhat indifferent.
Here, I was quietly moved
by the phrase, "The good times bring back the pain in my chest."
A kind of twisted kindness, like being afraid of getting hurt
and intentionally pushing the other person away
by saying, "I'm tired enough to feel lonely."
I have memories of that,
even from my own youth.
The immature romances of those days
and the faces of people I drifted apart from
come to mind
along with a nostalgic pain.
But unlike when I was young,
now that I've reached this age,
I feel like I can accept even that pain
as a precious lingering memory.
☕ Time melting away in a quiet room
Towards the end of the song, a slightly bittersweet scene is depicted where "dreams wither and fade away."
It's not a perfectly smart romance, but the atmosphere of those days—somewhat pathetic yet desperate—seems to be conveyed directly through the melody.
Back then, I thought it was just a sad song that made my heart ache.
However, listening to it now after many years, that sense of being unfinished feels irresistibly endearing.
In a quiet room, while sipping coffee that is slowly cooling, I was able to spend such a peaceful time, as if gently embracing my own clumsy youth.
In what moments do you feel like listening to this song?
Well, I think I'll brew another cup of coffee. I had a wonderful time with a masterpiece again today 𓅫⸒⸒ If you'd like, I would be very happy if you could gently press the "Like" button to let me know.
