[Celebrating 3000 Users!] Introducing "LINE Notes Sync," an Obsidian plugin that lets you send notes from LINE to Obsidian

LINE Notes Sync Plugin

I have developed "LINE Notes Sync," a plugin that allows you to send notes from the LINE app to Obsidian! With this plugin, you can import notes taken in LINE into Obsidian (Web).

This app is in beta, so issues may occur. Please contact me via DM for feedback or questions regarding bugs or glitches.

Development Background

I used to take notes using the Obsidian mobile app on my iPhone. However, I faced issues with app startup time and sync conflicts. When trying to record fleeting ideas while on the move or out and about, these issues became a psychological barrier, leading to a decrease in how often I took notes on my iPhone.

After considering ways to record ideas more easily, I focused on LINE, which I use daily. LINE is always running, and I can leave notes using the familiar action of sending a message.

Since there was no plugin to send notes directly from LINE to Obsidian, I developed this plugin to solve that problem.

Features of LINE Notes Sync

Basic Features

  • Automatic saving of LINE messages as Obsidian notes

  • Automatic file name generation based on date and time sent

  • Saving in Markdown format

  • Automatic sorting into date-based folders

  • Enhanced security (Added 2025/08/24)

  • Saving to a single file (Added 2025/08/24)

  • Image sending feature (Added 2026/02/18)

Sync Features

  • Manual sync: Execute via the sidebar button or command palette

  • Automatic sync: Automatic sync upon startup (Added 2025/05/11)

  • Periodic sync: Automatic sync at set intervals (Added 2025/05/11)

Setup Instructions

1. Installation on Obsidian

1. Launch Obsidian and open the settings screen (gear icon in the bottom left).

2. Select "Community plugins" -> "Browse".

3. Enter "LINE Notes Sync" in the search bar to search.

4. Find the "LINE Notes Sync" plugin in the search results and click the "Install" button.

5. After installation is complete, "Enable" the plugin.

1.5 Update

If you have already installed it, please update via "Options > Community plugins > Installed plugins > LINE Notes Sync".

2. Preparation on LINE

1. Open the LINE app.

2. Add the LINE official account (https://line.me/R/ti/p/@078wncqa) as a friend.

3. Once you have added the friend, you will be able to exchange messages with the official account for integration.

3. Obtaining your LINE User ID

1. Open the LINE Notes Sync official account you added as a friend.

2. Send any message (e.g., "test" or "hello").

3. A dedicated "LINE User ID" will be displayed via an automated reply.

4. This "LINE User ID" is a long alphanumeric string. Copy it or take a screenshot to save it.

5. This ID will be used to integrate with Obsidian in the next step.

Updated 2026/01/07
If you have forgotten your User ID or your history has been deleted, you can check your LINE User ID by entering /myid.

4. Linking Settings in Obsidian

1. Open the Obsidian settings screen

2. Select "LINE Notes Sync" from the list of installed plugins

3. Enter the following items on the settings page

  • Note folder path: The folder path within Obsidian where messages from LINE will be saved

    • Example: "Zettelkasten/Memo" or "LINE Memos"

    • If the folder does not exist, it will be created automatically

  • Vault ID: An arbitrary string to identify your Obsidian Vault

    • Example: Something easy to remember like "my-personal-vault"

    • This ID must be unique

  • LINE User ID: Copy and paste the ID obtained in Step 3 exactly

4. Once all information is entered, click the "Register Mapping" button

5. If successful, a confirmation message will appear, and the linking process is complete

5. Sync Settings

For synchronization, there is manual syncing (introduced in later sync methods) using the sync icon in the ribbon or by specifying "Sync LINE messages" in the command palette, but you can also sync automatically.

If you turn on Auto sync, it will sync automatically at the interval specified in Sync interval.

If you turn on Sync on startup, it will sync LINE messages when Obsidian starts up.

6. Save Settings

There are broadly three patterns for saving LINE messages.

1. Default

1 file is generated per message

Generated files are saved directly under the folder specified in Note Folder Path

2. Folder Management

By turning on "Organize by date" in the settings, generated files will be saved under a date-based folder.

3. Single file management (Added 2025/08/24)

By turning on "Group messages by date," messages will be synchronized into a single file.

There are several settings, so I will explain them in order.

*Turning on this feature will turn off folder management (you can turn folder management back on, but since only one file will be generated inside the folder, you won't be able to take advantage of the folder management feature).

  • Grouped message template
This determines the format in which messages written in LINE are displayed. By default, they are displayed in the format "Time: Text".

  • Grouped message frontmatter template
If a file with the specified name does not exist, this frontmatter will be added and a new file will be generated. If the file already exists, this frontmatter will not be added.

  • Grouped file name template
By default, files are generated with a date name including hyphens (e.g., 2025-08-24.md).
Using a date variable name will generate a new file for each date, but using a fixed file name will generate notes under the same file across different dates. Details are explained below.

Date-based file saving (default for single file management)

This applies when the file name is defined using the date variable (date with hyphens (default)) or the datecompact variable (date without hyphens).

In this case, LINE messages are saved to a file for the specified date.

Example) Notes written on 2025/08/24 -> all saved to 2025-08-24.md

With this pattern, when the date changes, the destination file also becomes a new one.

Fixed file

By setting the file name to a fixed file name, you can always output to that file (e.g., LINE Messages.md).

Notes written on 2025/08/23 and 2025/08/30 are all saved to LINE Messages.

Synchronization method

Message synchronization

1. Send a message using your ObsidianMemo account

2. Click the sync button added to the left sidebar in Obsidian to sync, or open the command palette (Ctrl/Cmd + P), type "Sync LINE messages," and execute it

3. A message will be displayed once the sync is successful

Sending images

In addition to text messages, you can also send images from LINE. However, you can only send up to 10 images on the free plan.

By subscribing to the premium plan, you can send an unlimited number of images (members of my experimental membership tier can use this for free!).

Example of sending an image

From here, I will explain the steps to subscribe to the premium plan.

1. Access this page or the URL displayed by typing /status

2. Select the premium plan

3. Enter your LINE User ID

If you don't know your ID, you can check it by typing "/myid". You can proceed to the purchase page by entering the confirmed ID into the LINE User ID field.

4. Stripe payment

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the payment

5. Check your status

Type /status in LINE again to check your plan

Useful usage tip: Integration with Daily Notes

By matching the folder path in "Note Folder path" with your daily notes and turning on "Group message by date" in the save settings, you can append LINE messages to the end of your daily notes.

Troubleshooting

  • Sync button is not responding: Check if the plugin is correctly enabled

  • Messages are not syncing: Check if the LINE User ID and Vault ID are entered correctly

  • Error message is displayed: Note the error details and provide feedback to the developer

  • Plugin not found: Update Obsidian to the latest version

  • Message failed to load: After updating to the latest version, you need to delete the encryptionKeys in data.json and restart Obsidian
