Even 10 seconds a day is a respectable habit
When most people try to build a habit, they tend to set big goals like "I'm going to walk for 20 minutes every day" or "I'm going to read for 30 minutes every day."
Of course, it would be wonderful if you could do that. However, if you set a big goal right from the start, there is a high chance you won't keep it up.
That is why it is important to start with small steps, like 10 seconds or 3 minutes.
Of course, 10 seconds is extreme, but...
But if you don't make it that small and granular, you won't be able to continue.
10 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds of reading, 10 seconds of stretching.
These might not necessarily produce any major results, but there is meaning in "continuing." Even if it is for a short time, when the feeling of
"I did it today too" accumulates within you, it gradually leads to self-confidence.
I used to think that "not being able to build habits" was a lifelong theme for me, like a lifelong shackle or pair of handcuffs.
I have always been a "three-day quitter." And, to be honest, there are still times when I quit after three days.
Sometimes, there are even periods where I don't keep up with anything at all, like a clean-shaven head.
Even so, I have realized something recently.
Habit formation doesn't last because people try to do big things all at once.
In my case, I have come to think that if I can continue for even 10 seconds a day, that is a respectable habit.
And if you can continue for 10 seconds a day for a week, then let's increase it to 30 seconds a day.
If there is too little load, you might get bored and quit.
A little bit of load is very important. That is because it strengthens the habit and becomes a step toward growth.
To give concrete examples, "reading just 3 lines a day" for reading, "leaving the house and walking for just 3 minutes" for walking, or "doing just 10 push-ups" for muscle training are good starts.
In this way, I prioritize "continuing" even for a very short time, and build up my actions little by little.
The important thing is not to aim for perfection, but to accumulate small actions.
The first step to continuing a habit can be just a very short amount of time.
Even if it is just 10 seconds, by repeating that, a big change will surely come eventually.
