Do AIs Need 'Persona Settings'? The Difference Between Effective Roles and Ineffective Titles | 10 Copy-Paste Templates

Hello everyone.Midnight Latte here.

Are 'persona settings' necessary for AI, or not?

"You are a top-tier marketer," "You are a professional editor"—have you ever heard that it's good to attach these kinds of "titles" at the beginning when asking an AI to do something?

But when you actually try it, you might feel that the answer doesn't change much whether you include them or not. Many people probably continue doing it vaguely, wondering, "Is there any point to this..."

I'll give you the conclusion first. You don't need "inflated titles." But you do need "roles."

It may sound contradictory, but it isn't. Tonight, I will organize the boundary between them, along with copy-paste templates you can use.

Why "titles" don't work

AI is a tool that "fills in missing information with average values." What's important here is that titles contain almost no "information."

Writing "You are a genius marketer with an annual income of 100 million yen" doesn't actually improve the AI's capabilities. The AI just answers with the power it already possesses, and the title is merely decoration—sometimes even noise.

In other words, what doesn't work isn't the "role itself," but rather the "inflated title" that lacks substance.

At first, I used to write "You are a top-tier so-and-so" or "Please answer as a pro among pros" almost every time. But after removing them and comparing the results several times, I found that the quality of the answers hardly changed. On the other hand, when I specified "as a proofreader," "as a strict reviewer," or "as a teacher for beginners," the perspective of the content returned clearly changed. That's when I realized that what was needed wasn't a "fancy-sounding title," but rather "which perspective I wanted it to look from."

Realization

When having it think of search tags for stock illustrations: Even if I inflated it by saying "You are a genius prompt engineer," all that came out were useless words like "beautiful, masterpiece." However, the moment I gave it a practical role like "from the perspective of a web designer looking for illustration materials," it started outputting truly necessary keywords like "transparent background, copy space, vector."

Trial

"Titles" and "roles" are different things

Even when "assigning a role," there are things that work and things that don't.

  • Ineffective (decoration): "You are a genius marketer with an annual income of 100 million yen"

  • Effective (functional): "Please read as a proofreader," "Please explain as a teacher"

The latter works because it makes the AI choose "which perspective (mode) to answer from." If it reads as a proofreader, it adopts the eyes of a "proofreader," and if you make it an idea generator, it adopts a "divergent" mindset. A role is a switch that changes the direction of the answer.

Situations where a persona is "needed / not needed"

Once you can distinguish this, you won't be confused anymore.

Situations where a role is 'needed'

  • Even with the same information, when the answer changes depending on the perspective

  • Example: Whether you want the text 'polished' or 'critiqued'

Situations where a role is 'not needed'

  • When the perspective is irrelevant, tasks where there is only one correct answer

  • Example: Simple calculations, translation, fact-checking, date conversion

Specifically, it looks like this correspondence table.

So, what actually works?

What moves the needle more than a role are these three things:

  1. Premise (Context): Who is this for, and what is the purpose?

  2. Output Format: Character count, bullet points, tables, etc., the visual structure

  3. Constraints: Things you don't want done (no sensationalism, no jargon, etc.)

For example, just saying 'think of a title' is weak.

You are a copywriter (role). You are writing an article about time-saving appliances for dual-income households in their 30s (premise). Provide 5 click-worthy titles, each under 30 characters (output format). No sensationalism or exaggeration (constraints).

Equation >> Role + Premise + (Request) + Output Format + Constraints

The role is just the 'trigger', but the remaining three determine the effectiveness. This is the essence.

A persona is not a magic spell that makes AI smarter.
However, it is a tool for telling the AI 'from what perspective to look at things.'

Therefore, what you need is not
'You are a genius,' but rather
'Please read this as a proofreader,'
'Please explain this for a beginner,'
'Please find the holes in this strictly,'
which are role assignments that convey a specific viewpoint.

NOT a magic spell

The '5-Second Checklist' Before You Send

  • ☐ Does the answer to that question change depending on the 'perspective'? → If yes, assign a role

  • ☐ Are you just padding the title as 'decoration'?

  • ☐ Have you provided the premises (who it's for, what it's for)?

  • ☐ Have you specified the output format (character count, bullet points, tables, etc.)?

  • ☐ Have you written down what you don't want it to do (constraints)?

Conclusion

The answer to 'Do you need a persona or not?' is,you don't need decoration, but you do need a functional role.

It was more important to carefully provide the premises, format, and constraints than to pad the title.
