Scooping 140 Characters from the Vast Ocean of Words
Hello. This is Iori Sakurakoji.
Since the start of this fiscal year, I have finally begun to think, "Maybe I should try my best with Twitter, too."
I would like to overcome the 140-character barrier by using note's "short posts" for minor announcements as much as possible.
Come to think of it, why is it 140 characters in the first place?
When I looked it up, I found that the roots of Twitter's character limit lie in SMS, and the roots of SMS lie in postcards.
It is said that 140 characters are sufficient for creating a coherent and meaningful piece of writing.
I am the type who creates longer pieces of writing and then trims them down, so the 140-character barrier still feels thick and high to me, but...
Thinking about it that way, I feel that 140 characters is an exquisite length—short yet long, and long yet short.
It is a length that allows you to convey anything if you try, so to speak.
But with a sea of words as vast as the stars in the sky, how should I spin those 140 characters?
Every time I think about that, I feel like I am about to be swallowed by an ocean of words that is far too wide and deep.
With a length of 140 characters, you cannot add detailed annotations.
You cannot write out long-winded excuses, nor can you line up words as your emotions dictate.
Surely, it will inevitably be lacking in words, and I won't be able to write anything clever.
To gently dip my hand into the vast ocean of words and scoop up the 140 characters I truly want to convey.
I hope that one day, I will be able to do that.
But for now, that ocean is still too cold for me to dip my hand into, and what I can scoop up is surely nothing but meaningless words.
So, for now, I am still in a state where I scoop up many words into a large, transparent vessel, sort them, and finally scoop them up with my hands.
At the very least, so that those words do not spill through my fingers.
I am thinking that I want to fill them with all of my thoughts.
The image I borrowed this time is a photograph of ocean waves. I feel that the many words that come to mind are somewhat like waves. They come and go, come and go, and their shape in any given moment is one of a kind. I want to continue recording those shapes, which crumble so easily, as articles here on note.
