Treating Qi and the Body with Care
Qi and the body are your gods—
Qi and the body are not separate. They are an inseparable aggregate and energy. The state of the body manifests directly as the state of your Qi, and disturbances in Qi manifest as physical discomfort and pain. That is why we speak of 'ill-Qi' (byoki) rather than just a diseased body. If you try to fix only one without understanding this relationship, you will eventually hit a limit. That is precisely why it is important to treat Qi and the body simultaneously and with care.
Many people treat their bodies carelessly. They push themselves when tired, ignore discomfort, and only try to deal with it once pain arises. At the same time, their handling of Qi is equally rough. They leave their moods in disarray, do not know how to stop their thoughts from running wild, and simply drift through their days. However, this is like handling a precision instrument roughly; you are essentially impairing the performance you were meant to achieve.
Treating them with care does not mean doing anything special. In fact, the opposite is true; it is more important not to do unnecessary things. For the body, this means releasing unnecessary tension and not forcing it to work harder than needed. For Qi, it means not overthinking and simply observing what arises. These 'subtractive' approaches ultimately lead to restoring harmony to the whole.
Take the act of standing, for example; the presence or absence of care is clearly visible. The sensation of the soles of your feet on the ground, the position of your center of gravity, the extension of your spine, symmetry, and the depth of your breath. If you handle these roughly, the body quickly becomes distorted and the flow of Qi stagnates. However, if you quietly adjust each one, you will naturally stabilize without forcing, your breathing will deepen, and you will find inner space. This state is where Qi and the body are in alignment.
The important thing is not to limit this feeling to special times. Care is tested in daily life. When walking, sitting, holding objects, or talking to people—the way you handle your Qi and body is revealed in every single action. If you treat them carelessly, a careless state accumulates; if you treat them with care, a careful state accumulates. Eventually, this becomes the quality of your body, the quality of your Qi, and ultimately, it shapes your very way of life.
Treating Qi and the body with care is, in the end, a question of how you treat yourself. Those who treat themselves poorly will never reach deep levels, no matter how much technique they learn. Conversely, those who treat themselves with care will change steadily, even without doing anything flashy. Even if that change seems small, it is certain, and over time, it will manifest as a significant difference.
Care is not weakness. Rather, it is the minimum necessary courtesy. Treating Qi and the body with care is the most certain way to devote yourself to your own god and receive its grace. Do not rush, do not be impatient, but be certain. A mind and body cultivated in this way will not betray you in any situation; they will continue to save you quietly, yet powerfully.
