Places that make you feel 'this is nice' — From the words of Junzo Yoshimura
There are moments in a house when you suddenly think, "This place feels nice."
It might be the way the light enters, the flow of the breeze,
or the way the voices of your family reach you.
The words of architect Junzo Yoshimura are filled with a philosophy
that cherishes such "modest comforts."
🪶 Searching for the 'nice' in everyday life
"To create a place where the person living there feels 'this is nice'—that is design."
Every time I read these words, I feel that the essence of the work of design
is not "drawing blueprints," but imagining "people's feelings."
The moment light slowly streams in through the window in the morning.
The time spent sitting in your favorite chair drinking coffee.
Places where you can cherish such small moments
might be exactly what Yoshimura-sensei meant by a "nice place."
He also said this:
"A house is a vessel that envelops a person's life and psychology."
A vessel is not something that determines its shape, but something that changes based on what is poured into it.
That is why I believe architecture is completed by the way the residents live.
Accumulating moments in daily life where you think, "I like this place,"
little by little,
might be the most natural form of "design."
☕ In everyday life
Thinking about a house is re-examining how you live your life.
Even if it is not a perfect design,
it is enough to have a space where you and your family feel, "This place is good."
Trusting that feeling of "this is nice,"
I want to continue organizing my small life today as well.
