Summary of Feedback from My First Trial Presentation in 4 Years💛

Last night, I gave a 50-minute online presentation to a closed community of the Japan Professional Speakers Association, and 30 people attended.

Before my first presentation at the Nakano City Industry Promotion Center course, I had done a trial presentation in this community. I have summarized my first presentation in four years and the feedback I received for my own reflection.

My first trial presentation in 4 years

I first presented at the Nakano City Industry Promotion Center course in October 2021.

Two months prior, in August, I had done a trial presentation.

I only presented the workshop portion for 50 minutes, but...

I was happy that when the moderator asked the participants, "Who would like to attend the full two-hour version?", almost everyone raised their hands😊

Over 100 students for 4 consecutive years

Thanks to the feedback I received during the trial presentation and the subsequent refinements, my course at the Nakano City Industry Promotion Center has been attended by over 100 people for four consecutive years.

I have compiled the note articles I wrote when I presented at the Nakano City course below↓

Sometimes people I meet for the first time tell me, "I thought you were trustworthy because you teach courses for the local government." I am grateful for the opportunity to gain this experience.

Presented under the title "True Interaction Experience Seminar"

The title was, "True Interaction Experience Seminar for Instructors Who Want to Increase Their Training Content."

Things I kept in mind for the presentation

Since it was about "interaction," I made sure to create a two-way flow.

Rather than explaining the communication models that lead to success in words, I structured it so that participants could watch and experience actual role-playing.

I have summarized the feedback for my own reflection.

Good points

It is good that you started by involving the participants and maintained a two-way interaction.

It was good that you picked up on the poll results and used them as a "setup" for what was to follow.

I think the point of saying you will proceed based on the poll results is good because it creates interactivity and a sense of being live.

I think the flow of talking about your own experience and step-up before moving into the main topic is good and easy to empathize with.

The photo of the entire Tech Support team is impactful and great!

You used many photos, making the page engaging. As expected, it is wonderful.

I think it is very good that you utilized the chat to pick up comments and proceed interactively.

I wanted to use your presentation material creation (colors, text presentation, images, etc.) for your unique 'True Interaction' introduction as a reference.

The interactive communication and not leaving anyone behind was appreciated.

The supportive way you facilitated, which created a sense of closeness, was good.

Your vocal projection and the way you addressed the audience were friendly.

The way you used the chat and picked up on individual comments was very good.

The way you presented the photos was good.

I felt that you were consciously being gentle and fostering psychological safety while speaking at a good tempo. I thought it was a nice challenge to do a mock presentation that no one else has done yet! Today's feedback was also very educational for me. Thank you very much.

Areas for improvement

Regarding the poll options, they are quite specific, so I felt it was difficult to maintain comprehensiveness and that there might be people who don't fit into any of them (I was one of them).

Since many people were looking for horizontal connections among instructors in the poll results, I think it would be even better if you could connect your talk while conveying that part more in your words.

The self-introduction could have been shorter.

I wondered where the talk about 'True Interaction' was going to start. Isn't the lead-up to that a bit long?

The term 'Administrator' might be unfamiliar and difficult to understand for those who don't know about the assessment. Wouldn't an introduction like 'Main Instructor' be better?

I thought it might be good to include a downward arrow or something similar so that it is easy to see that the turnover rate has decreased.

When you skip a slide, I think it would be better to return to it smartly without muttering things like 'Oops, I skipped it!'.

Certainly, two-way communication is good, but sometimes you verbalize so many reactions that important content gets a bit buried.

I think it would be easier to understand if you didn't include case studies when talking about the foundation of trust...

Your sentence endings gradually turn into a whisper and fade away, so I think you should be conscious of speaking clearly until the very end.

There are photos and diagrams for each point, making it easy to understand and memorable. On the other hand, because it is memorable, many keywords like Tech Support, Assessor, True Interaction, etc., appeared in a short time, and I was sometimes confused about what the topic was.

I wanted to know what True Interaction is at the beginning.

I thought it would be easier to understand if there was a comparison table showing the difference between Interaction and True Interaction.

If the main goal is to recruit members, I thought it would be better to show more achievements and the overall picture.

I realized in the end that it was an advertisement.

The part where your speech turned into a whisper halfway through is a point for improvement.

I thought people would be more interested if you explained the effects and achievements.

It would be better to talk about the overall picture first.

In terms of what kind of talk would make me want to participate, it would have been good if you had said at the beginning that you would also explain the 'True Interaction Course Information Session'.

Feedback on the role-play

The role-play was easy to understand.
I thought it was good that it was patterned.
I thought that if the participants understood it, they could use it as is.

It was symptomatic in line with the theme, and I had doubts about whether it was fundamentally correcting the subordinate's pattern, but there was an impact in how much it drops if you follow the question type.

Because your voice was gentle and there was a lot of text, my concentration was interrupted, and I was confused about what kind of role-play it was.

I was a little surprised that you used the boss's words, 'Can I have a moment?'

Your way of speaking was calm and polite, so I felt at ease.
On the other hand, there was little variation.

Is the goal to be able to use the pattern?
Is the goal to be able to conduct training using the pattern?

Are you asking why they are busy? Isn't it the reason why they cannot conduct the 5-company survey?

One vote for the Academy Award for the role of Mr. Hinomoto!

I feel like the problematic behavior was deciding on their own not to conduct the 5-company survey.

I understood it as a symptomatic treatment for this problematic behavior, but aren't you going to mention the fundamental solution to Mr. Hinomoto's behavior (or way of thinking)? I feel like the same phenomenon might happen again when Mr. Hinomoto transfers to a different workplace.

That's right. The goal is not symptomatic treatment, but to improve the root cause.

In the actual training, there might be more lead-up before watching the role-play, but with a shallow understanding, I think this role-play is long. Since concentration fades halfway through, I think it would be better to do it in short, focused steps, or show a simple one first.
Also, I felt that showing a bad example first would be more effective.

Yes, as you say, it feels a bit long for this session. In the actual training, I will show a bad example during the explanation.

I think the results of your practice are wonderful, but since this is a trial seminar, it is important to keep the participants interested.

I think Shimomayu-san's courage and initiative in practicing the difficult parts and challenging yourself to a role-play in front of everyone is wonderful.

While juggling various activities and serving as a director of Shin-Interaction, you responded flexibly to live role-playing, and I thought your efforts were amazing. I feel this is a challenge that sparks interest and curiosity in Shin-Interaction!

It might be better to show how to provide feedback at the beginning. You did it well, but it's difficult without an example.

The purpose was blurred, and it ended up feeling like 'Is this an Interaction practice session?'

The meaning of participating in the workshop as an observer was difficult to understand.

The purpose of providing feedback was difficult to understand.

The interaction was educational. The workshop felt long, and I couldn't concentrate.

Comments from developer Kuniyuki Fujimoto

Thank you for your hard work. I understood the objective. As an instructor, I will comment on the role-play: in role-plays, I think it is better to maintain your own tone rather than forcing a boss-like tone.

Shin-Interaction is a 'form' for discussion.
Just as much learning begins with form, the concept is to learn communication through form as well, and master it through the process of 'shu-ha-ri' (follow, break, transcend).
I explain the form through basic actions and action procedures (steps), and the points that make up those steps.
What is useful for mastery is mutual enlightenment role-play.
We summarize problematic behaviors in the actual workplace into cases and practice by taking turns.
The instructor's role is to provide that instruction and show examples.

What is expected of an instructor in Shin-Interaction training is the explanation of the 'form' and the promotion of mutual enlightenment role-play. Furthermore, Shin-Interaction is compatible with various types of training and can be utilized as part of management training, OJT leader training, etc.
I would be grateful if you could use it as one of your own tools.

Response to Instructor Fujimoto's comments

Thank you.
That explanation makes it easy to understand.

A 'form' for discussion, that's great!

I am becoming confused about whether the purpose of the course is to become able to use this form, or to become able to explain how to use this form.

The purpose is to become able to use the form.
This time it is about behavioral correction, but there are seven other 'form' patterns as well.

The purpose of this introductory seminar is to have people understand what kind of courses they will be able to conduct as instructors and to get them interested.

Yes, the explanation of how to use the feedback sheet might have been a bit short, but we will provide feedback in group work on how well you were able to implement that form.

I felt the explanation of what happens when you use the model was a bit weak.

Difference from coaching → Chat supplement

Before the role-play, I think more explanation is needed regarding the model for discussing the true interaction for behavioral correction. I feel it is necessary for people to first understand what kind of communication model it is, such as how it differs from coaching.

Explanation regarding the difference from coaching is necessary

In coaching, 'the answer lies within the other person,' but in true interaction, 'the answer is created by the two of you.'

About the Trial Lab

As always, I thought it was a wonderful session where I could receive a lot of candid feedback.

It was good to see the high level of psychological safety in the Trial Lab and everyone's kindness. Thank you for your hard work, Shimomayu-san.

I enjoyed learning! Thank you very much.
Please let me participate again.
