A story about trying to stop living by comparison.
I plan to post articles on Saturday nights.
At my own pace, in a way I can continue without strain.
I hope this will be an opportunity for someone to think about their career.
-----------------------------------------------
A life spent comparing, as naturally as breathing.
There was a time when I lived just like that.
Starting with appearance, where I lived,
the size and income of the company I worked for,
whether or not I felt a sense of fulfillment.
In the end, even things like family or friends,
things completely unrelated to me that were none of my business...
I walked through life comparing myself to someone else's version of those things.
Better than someone, worse than someone.
Measuring things with the world's most unreliable ruler,
I was just cornering myself.
I think I understand that feeling.
You could even see it as being 'human'.
But still...
At least regarding careers, without a doubt,
I now think there is no meaning in these comparisons.
I have decided to take on a life without comparison.
I would like to introduce the daily questions I use for that purpose.
“Do you truly desire that?”
The grass always looks greener on the other side.
However, when I calmly ask myself that question,
there are actually quite a few things I don't really want.
It is a question that makes me feel sorry for the limited time spent feeling anxious from comparing, even though I don't actually want those things.
“Once you obtain it, what will you seek next?”
If you imagine yourself having obtained it,
what will you compare yourself to next?
It is a question that makes you realize you are in an endless maze.
“Do not look away from your own desires”
I want to do this kind of work, I want to be this kind of person, I want to follow this kind of career.
When you are about to compare yourself to someone, try organizing what you want and your situation.
Don't just do it roughly; write it down carefully, taking as much time as possible, down to the level of detail.
And it is also important to have the conviction not to change the ruler you have organized for yourself so easily.
When you try to stop living by comparison,
first, you will be surprised at how much time and emotion you were spending on comparing yourself to others.
A shock beyond imagination, and a kind of emptiness will gradually emerge. A strange emptiness that naturally makes the corners of your mouth lift.
As you continue to spend your days being conscious of these questions, you will start to find the feeling of meaningless comparisons disappearing one by one to be somewhat interesting and joyful.
Naturally, when you start simply heading toward the figure you have decided on rather than comparing, you begin to see existences other than yourself as more precious and beautiful. Even the scenery in front of you and the familiar sounds of daily life start to feel beautiful.
Now that everyone can post about their daily lives on social media,
it is overflowing with material for comparison.
Few people post to make themselves look bad, so naturally, those who see it will surely feel it is good.
That is why it feels like they are better people, or living better lives than you. That is precisely why, stop living by comparison. I hope such an option reaches those who are suffering now.
If Tokyo Tower started saying it envied the height of the Skytree... I would really want to ask it if it truly desires that, what it would seek next, and how it wants to be, wouldn't you?
Thank you for reading again today!
