Private Movie Log... "ON AIR" 2002 [Movie Review]

I write various things here and there, publish books, speak at seminars, direct PR mainly related to the web, release music works, run an artist introduction site, make rabbit videos... and while I do all that, I've started this 71st entry to write down my thoughts on movies and such that I've watched so far, which I haven't been able to write about anywhere else.

This time, it's about the movie "ON AIR," where two people who left an impact in "Kinpachi-sensei" now play a separated couple.

I'll state this beforehand: as a rule, I write without worrying about spoilers at all, so those who haven't seen it yet or are concerned about spoilers might be better off not reading this.

By the way, to make an excuse in advance, this review is also something I wrote quite a while ago and have just touched up a bit before posting, so it might differ from current information, and I hope you'll forgive me for that (I have a lot of excuses from the beginning every time).

Actually, I saw it completely by chance on Hikari TV. So, at first, I didn't even know what kind of movie it was.
But this is interesting. It feels like watching a theatrical stage performance.
Each character is interesting and enjoyable.
Furthermore, the setting of behind-the-scenes at a TV station is also interesting.
I think it's truly amazing how they successfully used a limited setting to build that worldview almost entirely through words, interactions, and character movements.
And that world is interesting too.

As a story, it has an image close to Koki Mitani's "Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald," but the two main cast members are Shingo Tsurumi and Kaoru Sugita, who played that incredibly impactful "13-year-old mother" episode in "Kinpachi-sensei." In this work, the two of them are a separated couple, and furthermore, as a TV production company producer and a screenwriter, they deal with this crisis situation... It's fun to think, could those two have grown up to become this? ...I end up thinking such silly things.

Also, the back-and-forth between the two is incredibly funny.
It feels so natural that I wonder if it's their real selves, and I also think it's amazing how the changes in their relationship (a couple but separated & a certain hierarchy at the workplace & a subtle yet close sense of distance) are expressed.

This movie is also produced by Shingo Tsurumi.
Wow, he made something interesting.
I think there should be more movies like this.
Well, it might be hard to appeal to the general public, though.

By the way, why isn't this movie listed on Wikipedia, nor on Shingo Tsurumi's Wikipedia page?
Even though it's listed on Shingo Tsurumi's profile on the Horipro side.
That's strange.
