Mt. Fuji in the Next Seat ①
"Oh, look, Mt. Fuji!"
My mother's voice and the cold atmosphere around us made cold sweat break out under my thick coat.
(Stop it, Mom, it's embarrassing!)
I shouted with my profile, pretending to be expressionless. This morning was the big day, the tension was rising, the air was cold and clear, and the white peak in the far distance was showing its brave figure. Although I was accompanied by my mother, I wasn't even wearing my glasses in the car, and I didn't have the peace of mind to look out the window.
Now, the real thing. There were five questions. They all seemed tough, but I had a flash of inspiration. All roads lead to the summit. The examinee next to me is muttering.
"A parrot cries at the foot of Mt. Fuji,"
Is that root 5? Sure enough, number 5 is the easiest. That answer was a hint for question 4. That answer was a hint for question 3, and that... hmm. Question 1 is difficult, what should I do? The examinee in the next seat is writing with a sound. Huh? Huh? I saw it. The answer, and the person's face too. It's my mother, Fujiko.
"You were heading straight down the descent route from the fifth station. Please climb up again from the base of the basics." We, mother and child, were talked down to by the examiner.
