Mastermind Koshien 3
"Grandpa, are you a political don and a fixer?" my elementary school-aged grandson, who was visiting for the holidays, suddenly blurted out during dinner. Everyone at the table sprayed their beer or barley tea all at once.
"What are you talking about? Did you read some weird manga?" My wife and daughter looked dumbfounded.
"But that's what 'mastermind' means, right?" he said in an innocent tone.
"There must have been some misunderstanding that led to that word," my son-in-law said, smiling as he threw me a lifeline.
"There are people in all sorts of positions in this world. Depending on the angle you look at it, one thing can be both white and black. For most people, it's more appropriate to call Grandpa an unsung hero, a pillar of support, or a star on the ground." He's as smooth-talking as ever. Then my daughter
"Ah! I get it!" she shouted.
"That must be it." She pointed to a certificate of merit I received for a fighting spirit award at theBlack Belt Koshienthat was held at a baseball stadium the year the dojo couldn't be used due to renovations. It's true that the cursive script for 'belt' doesn't look unlike a 'curtain' (maku). The whole family was convinced and burst into laughter. Still, that was a close call.
