Work with Ingenuity
The kind of fun work I envision has long been what I consider to be work with ingenuity.
When I look up the meaning of ingenuity in the dictionary again, it says, "to find original ideas and come up with new methods."
It is a term that seems understandable yet elusive, but in short, it means finding a new way.
Every job has a set purpose. However, there is more than one way to reach that purpose.
Depending on a person's position, the times, and the resources they have, there are various methodologies, each with its own unique process.
Exploring one's own process to reach a goal is the real thrill of work, and I believe this exploration is exactly what "ingenuity" is.
That is why I think work that allows for "ingenuity" in the process of aiming for the heights (the goal) is fun, but the world is not just full of such work.
There are many jobs where you must follow a set process, and in fact, most jobs in the world may have processes that are firmly fixed.
I introduced the definition of "ingenuity" as a new method based on original ideas, but originality and fixed processes are completely incompatible.
I always want to think of new methods and take new actions, but that way of thinking is always in conflict with the opposite view.
To put it bluntly, I call jobs that force such standardized processes "contractor work."
In this case, please imagine "contractors" as people who are given a set task and are restricted from deviating from the conventional way of doing things in terms of process.
Or, the civil servants in the movie "Ikiru" would also be a good example.
It is a world where precedents or old rules are prioritized rather than new ideas or new methods.
Of course, such work should not disappear entirely, and some types of routine work can be fun.
However, I am convinced that there should be various approaches to a "purpose."
Even if it is not consistent with previous methods, if you do not look at things with a spirit of "ingenuity," might you not easily become a boring, rigid person?
