Walking the Talk is Difficult: A Story About 'Speaking' and 'Releasing'
Not everyone who declares, 'I will do this!' is able to fulfill it. Did you achieve your resolutions from last year? How about your daily note-writing declarations? There are many people who cannot realize them. Why is that?
● First, let's look back at history.
In the first place, 'Yugen-jikko' (walking the talk) is a new term; the original four-character idiom is 'Fugen-jikko' (acting without speaking). It refers to the figure of someone who simply executes without prattling on about what they are thinking, and it was used with a positive meaning, implying virtue or reliability. Going back even further, the origin of 'Fugen-jikko' is found in a passage from the 'Liren' chapter of the 'Analects'.
The Master said, 'The superior man wishes to be slow in his speech and earnest in his conduct.'
It is turned into the four-character idiom 'Totsugen-binko,' but simply put, it means 'The coolest humans act without rambling on.' meaning. The Analects are fun, aren't they? No one ever said that walking the talk is good. Competent people work quickly, and the speed of their email replies is remarkable. That is a way to build a track record while building trust.
● Next, let's think about it psychologically.
When you put things into words, you start to feel like they might come true. You might actually be able to work harder because of it, or people around you might praise you, saying, 'Well said!' There is a pitfall here.
A psychological effect kicks in where you fall under the illusion that you have already achieved it just by putting it into words. If praise from others like 'Well said!' is added to that, you might mistake yourself for having done a good job. As a result, you end up feeling satisfied 'vicariously' just by declaring something you haven't achieved yet. This will only distance you from your goal.
In addition, even if you do something good, if you don't reach the 'content you declared,' you won't be evaluated. Then you feel unnecessary stress, and you become bound by your own words. I think the moment of declaration is the peak of motivation for walking the talk.
● Furthermore, let's think about it metaphysically.
There is an argument that when something bad happens or you have a bad dream, you 'release' it by 'speaking' it to someone. There is no way to experiment with this, but intuitively, it is a fact. And if we assume this is a fact,
why do we think that declarations of goals or will do not 'get released'?
Here, two forces are at work.
When you declare something, your will to execute it becomes stronger. 'Since I said it, I'll do it.' However, on the other hand, the power to 'release' acts on the content you 'spoke.' Unless you hold onto that will with considerable courage, it will easily escape. You repeat the content of your declaration in your own mind far more often than you actually declare it, don't you?
● In the end, what should we do?
People are evaluated by their actions, not their words. No matter how moving a speech you give, if it is not accompanied by actions and results, it is just empty.
If you have time to declare, you should act immediately.
This is today's conclusion.
Of course, it is cool if you can walk the talk, but if you cannot realize it, it is not just zero, it is a minus. I am not strong enough to walk the talk. I have resolutions for this year, but I will never tell anyone. I was able to achieve last year's resolutions, but I won't tell anyone about that either. It is boorish to go out of your way to tell people things that are obvious if they just look.
Now, what is your goal?
Please, try ruminating on it without saying it out loud.
Motivation is bubbling up within you.
Please, just take action.
Remember, there is that famous saying by Confucius in the Analects.
The truly cool human being acts without making excuses.
Thank you very much for staying with my humble writing until the end. I hope that your 'wishes,' 'dreams,' and 'goals' will be known to everyone through their achievement and that you will be surrounded by a storm of praise.
