【Memories of a Vending Machine】The small happiness of getting another juice by winning with my last 120 yen🙂
This time, I've written it as a short story in a novel style😺
Please take a moment in your spare time to immerse yourself in a "vending machine memory" that I experienced😊
Main Story
It was a sweltering summer afternoon, the kind where the asphalt seemed to shimmer and sway.
When I rummaged through my pocket, I heard the clinking sound of two or three coins hitting each other.
120 yen in total. It was loose change I had somehow left out of my wallet on my way home yesterday.
My throat was parched, and my mind was filled with thoughts of "cold carbonated drinks."
However, if I spent this 120 yen, I wouldn't be able to buy anything at the convenience store tonight.
As I was walking and thinking about that, an old, weathered vending machine on the street corner caught my eye.
It was just a slightly dull, white vending machine like any other.
But today, the juices lined up inside looked like sparkling jewels to me.
I only hesitated for a split second.
"Oh well. Today is a special occasion." I told myself that, and inserted the 120 yen into the coin slot.
I chose an orange-colored carbonated drink. It was one I had loved since I was a child.
I picked up the can that fell with a thud and immediately pulled the tab.
The coldness traveled to my fingertips, and the moment I took a sip, a fizzy, refreshing sensation rushed down my throat.
"Ah, that hits the spot..."
And that was when it happened.
The vending machine display began to flash, and the numbers started spinning around.
“Wait, what?”
Right before my eyes, the numbers stopped dead.
7-7-7.
“...You’ve got to be kidding me.”
The next moment, another can of juice clattered down.
“No way! I never even dreamed I’d win.”
I couldn't help but speak out loud. I couldn't help but laugh.
All alone on the roadside where no one was watching. Even though I hadn't expected to win at all.
I sat down on a bench and picked up the can that had fallen.
The breeze, which felt a little cooler than before, gently brushed the sweat from my forehead.
Two juices for just 120 yen.
But what made me happier than that was this indescribable feeling.
“It’s been a while since I’ve felt something like this.”
A “little happiness” I had forgotten, buried in the busyness of my daily life.
Today, by chance, it rolled right out of the vending machine.
I looked up at the sky, and the blue stretched on forever.
Even this heat feels a little bit nice, just for today.
I opened the other can and took a gulp, my throat clicking as I swallowed.
The faint sweetness of the carbonation seeped slowly into my heart.
Just an ordinary summer day.
But I'm sure that days like this are the ones that will suddenly come to mind later on.
Afterword
This time, I expressed my memories of a vending machine through a short story mixed with personal experience.
I think the probability of winning another drink from a vending machine is something only someone who worked for a major manufacturer would know.
Even if they did know, it's probably a trade secret, so they wouldn't talk about it.
I hope that a little happiness comes your way, too🙂
