[Educational × Board Games] A mysterious sense of guilt that feels good✨ Fishing by poking holes in A4 paper🎣✨ "Kayanak"
🧩[COVID-19 Pandemic × Board Games]!?
With the COVID-19 pandemic, time spent at home has increased, and
the value of board games
is being re-evaluated even more.
While spending quality time with family,
board games that allow for educational development
might truly be something to start "now"✨
By the way, in our house, we don't count board games as
daily necessities or luxury items, but rather
as "educational expenses"✨
The board game this time is,
believe it or not, a game where you poke holes in paper
to catch fish and compete for the catch✨
🧩What you can gain from this board game
① Acting while anticipating and predicting results
② A rule where it's officially okay to destroy things✨
③ Manipulating objects and having free control
④ Learning the wonders of dice probability
⑤ The experience of defeating adults in a serious match✨
⑥ Time spent sharing the same experience with family

Please refer to this article.
➡ How do you raise a "smart child"?
🧩What's under the ice? Shave the ice and go fishing✨
[Introducing the appeal of Kayanak]

The game I'm introducing this time is
"Kayanak".
Once you get a little used to board games,
you start wanting to play something with a twist.
It's the perfect game for times like that✨✨
Believe it or not, in this game,
you use an ice pick to
poke holes in the paper,
and drop a fishing line to catch fish✨

⬆️Poke a hole with the tip, and there's a magnet at the end of the fishing line!
This exhilarating feeling of poking holes in paper
is the greatest appeal that you can't experience
in other games🍀✨
Now, let's introduce it!
🧩[Game Overview]
🌱 Play time ➡ Approx. 15 minutes~
🌱 Number of players ➡ 2 to 4 players✨
🌱 Target age ➡ From 6 years old to adults✨
🧩 Setting and Objective
"Kayanak" is a game where you become a polar bear, punch holes in the ice, and catch fish.
In the freezing Arctic, polar bears compete in the skill of catching their favorite fish.
Predict where the fish might be, punch a hole in the ice, skillfully maneuver your fishing rod, and the person who catches the most wins!
This game incorporates all three major elements of board game appeal✨
🧩 The 3 major elements of board games
① Children can compete and win against adults on equal footing.
② Grasp the rules for each game and change your strategy depending on the situation.
③ Share the same time with family and enjoy the same thing together.
🧩 The biggest appeal is the "element of luck"
Adults can compete on equal footing with children without holding back at all.
Being able to share the feelings of "happy to win" and "frustrated to lose" from the same perspective is the greatest appeal of games that include an element of luck✨
🧩 [How to play]
First, I will explain how to set up the ice field.
The mechanism under the ice field that serves as the stage is like this✨

⬆️ The bottom of the board looks like this✨ There are many small iron balls stuck in the holes✨
In this game, these small iron balls are treated as "fish".
(It would be easier to imagine if they were shaped a bit more like fish)
If you look closely, can you see that there are holes with 4 fish and holes with no fish at all?
This is the key point of this game✨

⬆️ Place the snowfield board on top of this.
And when you set the A4 paper here...

⬆️ The snowfield is ready
Once set up, give it a shake to randomly shuffle the positions of the fish✨
Then the game starts✨
Choose your bear and stand it on your favorite hole on the snowfield✨ There are detailed rules, but I will explain them simply🍀✨
In this game, you use a
”white die” and a
”blue die”, but
the white die holds the key✨

Polar bear ➡ Move the polar bear
Pickaxe ➡ Punch a hole around the polar bear
Fish ➡ Catch a fish from a hole around the polar bear
Star ➡ You can do any of the 3 above
The dots drawn on the picture represent the
number of times. If you only roll a
”polar bear”, the polar bear just wanders around; if you roll a
”pickaxe”, you just dig a hole; if you roll a
”fish”
, you can't catch anything if there are no holes. If the area is full of holes, you have to move the polar bear... In other words, it is no exaggeration to say that this game depends on how many ”star”
faces you roll!
”Blue die” has faces that allow you to block other polar bears from getting close or cover up holes you've made to interfere with your opponent, but I'll skip that for now.
Now, let's get to the best part of this game✨

”Pickaxe” comes up, aim for a hole near the polar bear where there might be a fish, and stab it hard to make a hole. Let's try it✨

⬆️ There, "Stab!!"
The sound of the ice breaking at this moment and the strange sense of guilt, as if you are doing something slightly bad, is actually addictive✨
Then, this time, a
”fish” face came up.

⬆️ I'll lower the fishing line here.
The action of accurately lowering this fishing line over the hole also requires dexterity, making it good fine motor practice for children✨
...Is there one? My heart is pounding✨
If there is a fish, it makes a ”click”
sound under the ice, and that is just irresistible✨

⬆️I caught one!✨
If you look closely, there are
small iron balls and
large iron balls✨
You can get 1 point for a small fish
and 2 points for a large fish
✨
In this way,
the person who gets 15 points first
wins this game✨

Now, how should we
calculate the numbers?
By separating and counting the small and large fish,
introducing the concept of multiplication,
or depending on how adults get creative,
you can teach mathematical concepts
to children in a fun way✨
🧩About HABA
This time, I introduced "Kayanak"✨
It is packed with so much charm,
so please try picking it up🍀✨
By the way, this is
released by a German company called HABA.
Actually, Germany is a country that
is extremely committed to toys (children's education)
, and every year there is a large toy contest,
where those that achieve good results are recognized as excellent for children,
and they go out into the world.
This "Kayanak" also entered in 1999 and won the Game of the Year award.
Some of the board games I have introduced in the past are also
HABA
games.
If you pay attention to which company makes them
when picking up board games,
your interests will expand even further✨
I would be happy if you look forward to the next one too✨
Thank you very much
for reading until the end🍀✨
