What do you do when you can't make a decision? [Audio Commentary]
It's a good day today, too.
Hello.
It's Satoru.
Whether it's business,
or life.
There are things you want to decide on,
but just can't, right?
In those times, nine times out of ten,
it's like that, isn't it?
Isn't it often the case that you actually "want to do it"?
・You don't have the time,
・You don't have enough money,
・You're scared because it's your first time,
・You think it might be too early for you,
・You think it's too late now,
・You're wondering if now is the right time.
You give a "NO" answer
for various reasons,
but deep down, it's a "YES".
Isn't that often the case?
Looking back now,
there are quite a few things I've lost
because I "couldn't make a decision" in my life.
I don't regret it,
but I imagine that if it were now,
I would have reached a different conclusion
and made the decision...
What is the psychology behind why people can't make decisions?
I think there are the following five causes.
I've also included some audio advice at the end,
so I'd like you to listen to it.
Your goals or vision are vague or weak.
If you are hesitant about a decision,
there must be several options in front of you.
In such cases, if it aligns with your goals or vision,
it is easier to make a concrete decision.
But conversely, if your goals or vision are vague
or thin, you lack the very thing
that serves as your criteria for judgment.
No wonder you're lost.
In times like that, it's better not to force a decision.
After all, if you haven't entered a destination into the navigation system,
there's a high chance you'll end up in the wrong place, right?
Perfectionism and fear of failure
I've had many people of this type around me.
Perfectionists.
Perfectionism might seem good at first glance, right?
But you know, perfectionism is nothing but a shackle.
People who enjoy stoically punishing themselves
might be fine, but such people
already have an incredible amount of action and experience,
so they make decisions quickly.
If you are a half-hearted perfectionist, your image
and reality are too far apart,
the psychological damage is significant,
and in the end, you can't take action.
You can't make decisions either.
My mentor always used to say,
Let's aim for a score of 60 out of 100.
Honestly, that's enough.
Once you've reached 60 points,
it's easy to build on that.
So instead of aiming for perfection,
let's give ourselves a passing grade once we've achieved half!
Caring about what others think
There were surprisingly many people like this too.
I hardly have this kind of thinking,
so I don't really understand it.
There is nothing more wasteful
than caring about what others think.
Because you are handing over your right to choose to someone else.
More than you think,
others don't care about you
even a little bit.
Even your parents or siblings.
When you think about it that way, you can be sure that the eyes of others
are nothing more than a product of your imagination.
I want you to make decisions based on your own standards.
Fear of change
This applies to me (bitter laugh).
Once you reach a certain age,
it becomes a hassle to deal with change.
Actually, I think that is what it means to "age."
That is why I am quite wary of
the part of myself that fears change.
Objectively speaking.
It is a metric I didn't have when I was young.
If I find myself hesitating to make a decision,
"Wait, am I afraid of change right now?"
I ask myself that question.
How about you?
Not being able to believe in yourself
Hesitating to make a decision
might also mean it is beyond your current capacity.
In the first place, it might be something you have never experienced,
or the hurdle might be extremely high.
But think back on the things you have overcome
in your life so far.
Entrance exams, finding a job, romance, changing careers, marriage...
Weren't they all new experiences that made you feel anxious?
You cleared all of them to get to where you are today, right?
You have always pushed past your limits until now.
So, you can rest easy and believe in yourself.
There is no need for humility or hesitation.
If you cannot believe in yourself,
who else will be able to believe in you?
It's okay! You'll be fine!
A word of advice via audio
I'm not very confident in my voice, but
what did I do when I was hesitant to make a decision?
I recorded it as audio, so please give it a listen if you'd like.
It's about 7 minutes long, so feel free to listen while doing something else (^^)
