The idea that 'once you set a goal, you must see it through' is a mistake
Thank you for always reading my articles.
This time, I will explain 'updating goal settings'.
Goals are fluid
In coaching, 'goal setting' is considered the most important point.
And a goal must always be 'want to' (something you truly want to do of your own volition).
However, when you actually try to write them down, many people will likely find it 'difficult'.
'I don't even know what I really want to do in the first place'
'I'm not confident if this is right'
'I don't have anything I desperately want, want to do, or want to become'
I think it's hard to find something that makes you say 'This is it!!'.
Even so, suppose you manage to squeeze one out and set it. In that moment, you were able to feel, 'Yeah, maybe I want this to some extent.'
However, when you look at that set goal a few days later, you feel, 'Hmm, do I really want this? (Do I want to do this? / Do I want to become this?)'
This is the state of 'if left alone, it stops being a want to'.
So why does this state happen?
There are broadly two reasons.
1. Because the information you possess and your surrounding environment change moment by moment
2. Because words are not that omnipotent
It is impossible for you and your surroundings to remain the same
The first is 'because the information you possess and your surrounding environment change moment by moment'.
The moment any goal is set, the brain begins to research that information. It starts finding information related to it from the scenery you have been looking at until now, and it starts picking up information you hadn't noticed before.
For example, suppose someone who felt their relationship with their family wasn't very good set a goal to 'build a good relationship with my family.' However, when they returned home, their mother had made dinner for them.
Things that were taken for granted and never consciously noticed before are suddenly noticed the moment the goal is set, and they might think, 'This is something I'm really grateful for'.
When this happens, they think, 'Isn't a good relationship with my family already built?' and feel, 'Was this goal right?'
(This is an actual case where someone I coached said they achieved their goal within that same day)
Also, the surrounding environment keeps changing.
For example, suppose you set a goal to 'become the top salesperson in the company.' However, a competitor might suddenly announce the release of a new product, and the product you are handling might become obsolete.
In this way, when the 'prerequisites' of the goal you set change, it becomes necessary to change the goal you set.
There are limits to what can be expressed in words
The second, 'because words are not that omnipotent', means that it is very difficult to properly express your thoughts in words.
For example, suppose you try to set a goal of 'wanting to make someone happy'.
In your mind, you can see the face of someone you did something for in the past who was happy because of it.
However, when you try to put that into words, you will likely realize that it is difficult to clearly articulate 'what exactly about my actions made them so happy?', 'why were they so happy?', or 'what kind of emotions were they feeling?'
As you can see, information in the world consists of things that can be put into 'language' and things that can only be expressed through 'non-verbal' means. (Even if you say 'I want to create a beautiful park,' the image of 'beautiful' can only be accurately expressed as the visual in your own mind.)
If that happens, even if you were able to set the goal initially, after a while you will start to feel that 'this expression doesn't quite capture the state I really want,' and you will drift away from your 'want to'.
It is just right to rewrite your goals daily
In this way, even if you can set a goal, environmental factors may change the prerequisites, or because it cannot be fully expressed in words, it may stop being a 'want to' if left alone.
Therefore,
'It is perfectly fine to look at your goals every day and change them.'
Many people think that once they decide on something, they shouldn't change it, but in order to keep feeling that you are always in a 'want to' state, you must make daily adjustments, otherwise you cannot maintain that 'want to' state.
Also, for parts that cannot be fully put into words, it is fine to just have an 'image.' Or, if you cannot put it into words, you may prepare pictures, photos, or videos as an 'ideal picture'.
In any case, keeping the state that you truly want from the bottom of your heart is the most important thing, so please try looking at your goals and making fine adjustments every day so that you can do so.
