I didn't know. You can change the text size on the fly.

I've been finding more situations where the text on my smartphone feels a bit too small.

When reading the news, when checking settings screens, or when I'm presented with a digital menu at a restaurant.

I find myself squinting, or moving the phone closer and further away.

Before I knew it, I was adjusting my eyes to fit the phone.

This has been happening more often, especially when eating out. It's becoming common for staff to show a QR code and say, "Please check the menu here." When I open it on my phone, the menu does appear, but sometimes the text is so small it's hard to read.

I can pinch to zoom in with two fingers. But every time I scroll, it shrinks back down, and I have to zoom in again. After doing this repeatedly, there have been times where I just thought, "Forget it, I'll just order something at random."

I used to think, "Isn't there a way to make the text on my phone a bit bigger?"

Add it to the Control Center

But in reality, I should have been adjusting the phone to fit me.

The iPhone has a setting that lets you quickly change the text size on the spot. First, you just need to add it once.

Swipe down from the top right of the screen to open the Control Center

↓

Tap the "+" in the top left

↓

Tap the "AA" icon (Text Size) to add it

That's all there is to it.

From now on, when you open the Control Center, a button with an "AA" icon will appear. When you press it, a slider appears, allowing you to adjust the text size on the spot. Just move it up to make it larger, or down to return it to normal.

You should adjust the phone to fit you

When I learned this, I thought, "I should have done this before looking for my reading glasses."

Now, when I read the news, I start by making the text a little larger. When I'm done reading, I change it back. It's such a simple thing, but my eyes don't get tired as easily anymore.

Even with restaurant menus, if you enlarge the text as soon as you open them, you no longer have to go through the trouble of pinching and zooming with two fingers.

To be honest, it seems this doesn't work for every app. Some apps don't support it. Even so, it is a huge help in situations where it is supported.

Instead of us having to adjust to small text, we can change it to a size that is easy to read. Just thinking that way has made the time I spend looking at my smartphone a little more comfortable.

It feels like a little win when you know these things. There is still plenty of room for growth, right? (laughs)
