Is "Consistency is power" profound? -- The meaning hidden in a cliché that we should understand
▼ Everyone! Please tell me your "motto"!
When I ask that --
More people than I imagined write down "Consistency is power".
Because continuing something is hard... I just started a note recently and was praised for that consistency (?) after "just one week"
"just one week" , so I understand the weight of "consistency" lol.
"weight of consistency"
That's exactly why it's too heavy to be a motto, and I end up thinking about various other things...
"Your motto is 'Consistency is power'? That's profound."
...when I accidentally reacted like that 😅
"Huh? How is it "profound"?"
...that question, asked with such pure feelings, is today's "inquiry".
▼ A person is an "aggregate".
Have you ever felt that your existence is an "aggregate" of many elements? For example, the body is a collection of tens of trillions of cells, and within the mind, different layers such as emotions, thoughts, and the unconscious coexist. Even consciousness and thoughts, which seem to be singular, have moments where you realize that multiple voices are actually mixed together, right?
I think the understanding that a person is an "aggregate" also shows a different side of "Consistency is power".
▼ What happens when you give an "aggregate" a "direction"?
When you give an "aggregate" a "direction (motivation)," dispersion (including waste) occurs due to variation, and it cannot stop suddenly.
...can you imagine that? I'm sorry. I might not be expressing my thoughts well lol. *I will break down the image of each element at the end of the article.
▼ What is "Consistency is power"?
When a "person" "continues" something --
It can also be thought of as giving an "aggregate" "consistency (direction)," which means a
"consistency pressure" ends up "occurring".
This applies not only to 'good consistency (including health)' but also to 'bad consistency (including illness)', meaning that a 'pressure of consistency' also arises for bad habits.
And, the longer you continue something, the stronger that 'pressure of consistency' becomes.
The worse the habit, the more unconsciously we continue it.
When you're young, that pressure of consistency isn't that strong, but...
At my age, I might not be able to resist it...
In other words, consistency is --
the act of creating 'yourself' through 'unconscious habits', and what you 'consistently' do determines your future 'self'.
...Isn't that what it means?
What we need to be conscious of regarding 'consistency is power' is
not so much 'continuing' the things we 'want to do or should do',
but rather 'stopping' the things we 'want to quit or shouldn't do', right? lol
In short, what I want to say most is,
if there is something you want to fix, correct, or quit, do it as soon as possible!
▼Conclusion
Do you know the movie 'The Big Short'?
The Japanese subtitle is 'A Magnificent Great Reversal',
but I think this completely misleads the content of the movie...
(Maybe it's a strategy to make it look like a more exhilarating movie!)
The actual content is not something exhilarating like a 'magnificent great reversal'!
It's a story based on the Lehman Shock, but...
It is a story about the world of deception and its inevitable collapse, and the
loneliness and despair when you are the only one who notices, and you know there is nothing you can do about it
. And the subprime mortgage crisis depicted in this work...
Wasn't this also caused by the 'pressure of consistency' resulting from people's consciousness?
When I thought about 'consistency is power' today,
I remembered a passage that appeared at the beginning (I think?) of this movie.
The trouble is not what you don't know.
It's what you 'assume you know' when you don't.
Yes, I thought I knew the phrase 'consistency is power' well, but--there was actually a 'deep caution' hidden there.
Even things we know have many facets.
It was a 'question' that made me think about that.
Well, thank you for joining me again today.
I hope this question has become a gateway to a new 'question' for you.

The Big Short
Based on a true story about the 2008 global financial crisis, it questions the dangers of collective assumptions and groupthink.

The subprime mortgage crisis depicted in this work was also triggered by the 'pressure to continue' driven by human perception. I will connect this to the inertia of collective human thinking.
Addendum:
The Essence of Collectives: Diversity and Variance
A collective is like a group of 'scattered particles' where each individual has different vectors, tempos, and interests.
→ When you give them a 'direction,' each vector tries to move forward while remaining misaligned, so 'diffusion' temporarily becomes stronger than 'convergence.'
Direction/Motivation: The Trade-off Between Propulsion and Fluctuation
Motivation and purpose bring 'progress,' but they simultaneously create 'uncontrollable acceleration' and 'inertia.'
→ The more motivation there is, the harder it becomes to make sudden changes in direction or to stop; this applies to organizations, herds, and individual mental states (e.g., mass hysteria, exploitative companies, runaway idealism, etc.).
What is 'Waste'?
The 'waste' contained in diffusion is often seen as inefficiency or energy dissipation, but it can also be a source of emergent value and accidental discovery.
→ It is not that 'diffusion = bad,' but rather 'how we evaluate diffusion' that is important. By the way, I value 'waste'! Sorry for saying something so trivial...
The Power That Cannot Stop: Inertia and Directional Dependence
The reason we 'cannot stop' lies in the 'inertia of the collective,' both physically and psychologically.
In particular, the stronger the 'direction,' the more 'resistance' works to maintain that course. This is true for trends in FX and stocks as well. In organizations and similar settings, stopping is easily perceived as 'betrayal' or 'defeat.'
By the way, I am thinking of the 'pressure to continue ≈ inertia + diffusion' mentioned in the article.
