Acquiring a Skill! How 'Just 15 Minutes' Changed My Future
Good morning.
Are you able to secure time for yourself?
I am sure you are all living very busy days.
Chasing after tasks, time passes in the blink of an eye.
But with a little ingenuity, you can turn it into“time that connects to the future.”It is a very simple method that you can
“start as early as tomorrow.”Today, I would like to share some of those hints.I would be happy if this could be of even a little help to the daily lives of everyone working hard in this world.
I had zero time for myself... or rather, it was in the negative.
Until a little while ago, having time for myself was a dream within a dream.
“Screaming”I experienced childbirth, which was a life-risking event, and joined a black company called“Child-rearing,”plunging into a bottomless pit of childcare time called“Patience.”The reward is
“a child's smile.”*Motivation duration varies by individual.
Just when I thought I had finished a mountain of tasks, I was entrusted with making decisions in situations that didn't go as planned, plus extra.
Priorities were constantly updated (and kept increasing) over time,
and before I knew it, my head was full of top priorities, leading to a brain panic.
I had an experience like this.
At the time, I was raising my 3-year-old and 2-year-old daughters.
My 3-year-old eldest daughter was in the middle of potty training.
My 2-year-old second daughter was in the middle of her 'no' phase.
At the entrance when we returned home from the park,
“I peed my pants!”said my eldest daughter, her clothes soaking wet.
She then sat down right there at the entrance (the damage to the entrance mat was hopeless).
“I still want to play at the park!!”said my second daughter, who was screaming and crying while spinning gracefully on the floor where we take off our shoes.
(Her head and clothes were covered in sand, too.)
Receiving multiple top priorities in an instant, my brain broke.
I took out my smartphone and took one photo.
📸 Click.
“May there be a version of me in the future who can look back on today.”
Wishing for that—.
I have daughters born in consecutive years.
I have almost no memory of the grueling childcare before they entered preschool, and of course, I have absolutely no memory of my own actions after taking this photo (am I some kind of politician?)
I am sure that mothers in this world, like me, each have their own grueling stories.
Before I knew it, my own time had vanished somewhere.
At the end of the day, instead of a sense of accomplishment,
I was left only with the exhaustion of feeling, 'I didn't get anything done for myself again today.'
'Am I just wearing myself out every day, taking care of the kids? Am I just like a dried bonito flake, being shaved down to make a good broth?'
'Is there nothing I can do for myself?'
That vague sense of unease had been deep in my heart for a long time.
That was when I encountered words that resonated with me.
🗣 'Time isn't something you find; it's something you make!!'
No way, that's impossible! I thought at first.
But, hmm? I wonder... these words alone entered my heart so easily.
From that day on—
I bought an 'Introduction to Programming' book on Amazon that I had been curious about and wanted to read for a long time.
I simply decided, 'I will finish reading this book,' and started by thinking about how to carve out some spare time.
✔ During the day, I'm chased by tasks (incidents), so securing time is difficult.
✔ At night, I'm too tired, making it inefficient to try and absorb new skills.
So, I 'set my spare time in the morning.'
To achieve this, I set a goal to do it within a range that is sustainable and effortless. That goal was
waking up 30 minutes earlier than usual. It was a very simple, low-barrier task.
However, the reality was...
'Mommy's not here!' I was busy dealing with my child waking up crying, and I could only secure 15 minutes.
Even so, I used those 15 minutes to read through my programming book.
In those spare moments where I didn't know when I'd be forced to stop, I didn't want to waste even a minute, so I was able to focus very well.
For someone already well-versed in programming, this might be a piece of cake. But reading 'if' statements at 5:00 AM was chaos. Lol.
That's a good memory now, too.
Small pockets of time can change your life.
The 15 minutes of spare time
I started by waking up 30 minutes early gradually expanded as my child grew, and before I knew it, it had turned into a routine of working from 4:00 AM to 6:30 AM.
At the time, I completed Progate, an online programming learning service that is fun for beginners and can be started for free. *This is not a promotion for Progate, but I do recommend it.
'My child's crying = the bell for forced termination' remained true, but I gradually succeeded in securing 'my own time.'
However, this is just my personal experience, and honestly, it is tough to practice this after a day of working late or trying to do morning activities while dealing with a baby's night crying. It is incredibly tough.
Just being sleep-deprived is enough to cause a total breakdown of one's personality.
In times like that, it's perfectly fine to say, 'Let's call it a day! I'm going to sleep!'
Instead of a sprint where you're always running at full speed,
I thought of it like a full marathon (in my own sense) where you aim to finish while checking in with your physical condition,
always keeping 'how can I keep this up?'as the main priority.
I believe this accumulation is what led to acquiring my skills.
As a result of continuing to learn this way, before I knew it, I had 'gained a skill.'
Now, while taking on web production jobs, I have been able to launch 'Mamski' (an online community that supports moms in learning web skills and finding new ways to work while raising children) with the friends I met along the way.
I couldn't have done it alone.
It contains the record of several years spent walking together with:
💡 Friends who overcame the loneliness of painful self-study
💡 'Precious friends I made even after becoming a mom' (I will write about this in a later article)
There is a record of several years of walking together.
There is no need to give up because 'I'm a mom...' or 'I'm too busy...'
Not at all. In fact, it's a source of hope.
If you are someone who has managed to get a job at the 'child-rearing company' known as a black company (my second time mentioning this today) and are handling your daily tasks, you definitely have the potential to see this through.
I believe that for those who truly 'want to change,'
the corresponding opportunities and encounters will naturally come their way.
Perhaps,
people who 'want to change' might just have more antennas tuned in.
