The Day I Cried While Confessing the Truth About the Beauty Industry
The reason I wanted to share 'authentic beauty'
Hello. I am Mai Tanaka, a hairstylist.
I am currently 35 years old and have been a hairstylist for 17 years.
In this post, I would like to share a little bit about my background and my thoughts.
After graduating from high school, I joined a salon chain.
There were about 20 of us in my cohort, including graduates from vocational schools,
and even though we were assigned to different locations, we grew by learning from and challenging each other in our respective workplaces.
While attending beauty school through a correspondence course, I worked as an assistant at the salon.
Even when I was a beginner who couldn't do much yet,
'I want to make the customers as happy as possible'
with that desire, I learned everything I could get my hands on, not just about hair, but also makeup, esthetics, and kimono dressing.
I wanted to make every customer who came to the shop look wonderful
and have them leave with a smile.
With that single-minded focus, I worked with all my might.
When I turned 30, I was promoted to manager of a newly opening store.
Beyond managing the floor, I had more opportunities to interact with manufacturers, distributors, and upper management at the company.
Around that time, I began to feel uncomfortable with the structure of the beauty industry, which prioritizes 'profit' above all else.
Most of the beauty products that the general public picks up
are actually[items with low production costs and extremely high profit margins]in reality.
And,
when hairstylists become the 'sellers,' there is a reality where they recommend products for the sake of sales rather than for the customer.
I myself felt deeply depressed when I realized that I had been recommending products to customers that I didn't actually believe were effective, just to meet quotas.

What on earth have I done to the customers who trusted me and made a purchase?
I have even cried at night thinking about that.
Even so, I wanted to start over as a hairstylist.
I wanted to be a hairstylist who could confidently recommend things that are truly good.
With that thought, I went back to learning, searched for beauty methods I could truly believe in,
and finally,'This is what I want to share'I arrived at a form I could stand by.
In this note,
I plan to share correct knowledge and information little by little,
with the theme of 'authentic beauty' from here on out.
For those who enjoy beauty as customers,
and for fellow hairstylists who are working while struggling with the same issues,
there are many things I would like you to know.
And in this book, I write about something that goes beyond the category of beauty alone.
True beauty
I have written about this as well.
I hope to write about that little by little as well.
Next time, I will talk about the book I have just published,
[The Day I Cried While Confessing the Truth About the Beauty Industry, and the Future Me Smiled]
—The path to true beauty found by a hairstylist who let go of 17 years of lies—
I will talk about it, unraveling it little by little.
