Unsuccessful salespeople sabotage themselves by acting like they just happened to be in the area
There are phrases we tend to use in new business sales.
“I’m going around this area in order…”
“I was in the neighborhood, so I just wanted to stop by and say hello…”
These are used all too often.
I used to say them all the time, too.
In fact, I even thought,
“If I make it sound like I’m just stopping by, they won’t be as guarded.”
But I know better now.
It’s actually the opposite.
In fact, with that one phrase,
you are making the customer think this:
“Oh, so it didn’t have to be us.”
The moment you say this,
the reason for them to listen to you disappears instantly.
It’s the same in dating.
“I was nearby, so I reached out.”
“I was bored, so I thought I’d invite you.”
How would you feel if someone said that to you?
I mean, they might not mean any harm.
But doesn’t it make you feel a bit cold?
You’d think,
“So it didn’t have to be me.”
Sales is exactly the same.
“I was in the neighborhood,”
“I’m going around in order,”
These words might seem like they lower the other person’s guard, but in reality,
“You are just one of many,”is what you are conveying.
Everyone, to some extent,
“wants to be treated as special.”
That is why what is needed first is
not a sense of “just stopping by,” butthe reason you chose them.
For example,
“I saw your website and was very impressed by your XX initiative.”
“Among all the companies in this area, I really wanted to speak with yours directly.”
“We are seeing similar issues increasing among other clients in your industry, and I thought it might be relevant to your company, so I reached out.”
When you say things like this,
the way you are received changes.
You are no longer seen as “someone here to sell something,” but as
“someone who came here for a specific reason.”
It makes you look like that.
This difference is quite significant.
Of course, this is not about telling lies.
There is no need to force compliments either.
What is important is to convey in a single sentence
why you reached out to this specific person today.
Instead of “I just happened to be in the area,” say,
“I have a reason to speak with you.”
Change your approach to this.
That alone will change how the customer prepares to receive you.
If you say, “I was just stopping by,”
you will be treated as a casual, unimportant conversation.
If you say, “I want to speak with you because it is your company,”
at the very least, a reason to listen is created.
Even for the same visit,
the way you entermakes it something completely different.
Starting tomorrow,
try sealing away phrases like
“I was in the neighborhood”
and “I am just making my rounds.”
Instead, use:
“I wanted to speak with you because it is your company”
“I saw XX and it caught my attention”
“The issues increasing in your industry seem relevant to your company”
↓
“I contacted you directly to speak with you, Mr./Ms. XX.”
Use that to start.
Customers do not want to be treated as just one of the crowd.
They only start to listen when they feel the conversation is directed at them.
Keep up the good work today🔥
