[Career] Work Style Reform for 2025 (Part 1)
I am currently working full-time while raising two young boys, an older one and a younger one, and exploring my own business during my spare time.
For several years, I have been thinking about changing my work style to coincide with my eldest son starting first grade next year.
The reasons are:
1. During this phase of transitioning from childcare to education, I want to establish a system where I can support my eldest son as much as possible.
With my current work style, I am physically and mentally exhausted...
I anticipate that I won't have the capacity to be gentle and attentive to my eldest son (since he will stop taking naps, he will be physically tired, and there will be new relationships at school and after-school care, as well as homework and school preparations).
2. I want to increase the time I spend exploring and taking action on my own business.
Although I say I am exploring my own business, currently I only spend about 15-30 minutes on weekday mornings and about 60 minutes on weekend mornings organizing my thoughts and thinking about my vision.
I haven't reached the stage of concrete action.
Well, considering I haven't faced myself for nearly 35 years, just thinking about my own affairs as my own business is progress in itself.
I don't know what next year's time schedule will look like until I actually live it, but I want to dedicate the time I save from my main job to my own business.
As for concrete actions...
・Studying for and obtaining certifications
・Researching people who are active in the local community
・Trying to host services for friends and communities on Stand.fm
I could just quit my main job!
or
Work only in the mornings! Work only 3 days a week!
are options, but
I want a certain level of financial leeway. ≒ Having a steady monthly income
When I'm too tired on weekdays, or when I'm too tired to cook after going out, I want to be able to eat out freely, and I want to go on trips. I also want to continue going to see musicals with my friends.
And I want to spend money on self-investment (learning).
I have such a vision in mind, but my current company offers three choices:
Full-time
or reduced working hours until 5:00 PM
or part-time.
My preference is to work reduced hours until 4:00 PM.
I work in home-visit rehabilitation, and I usually finish my last visit at 4:45 PM, so it's often past 5:00 PM by the time I return to the office.
In that case, working until 5:00 PM is a bit awkward...
If I work until 4:00 PM, I can finish by visiting two patients in the afternoon, ending at 3:30 PM. I can return to the office before 4:00 PM, which is perfect.
&
Getting home before 4:30 PM... this would be the time when my eldest son can eventually come home from after-school care by himself (if it gets late, he needs to be picked up)
&
Since my second son is still in daycare, picking him up after his snack time would be just right.
The company has about 30 employees and is a young company in its 7th year.
The representative is someone who always shows a positive attitude, saying, "If you have any suggestions, please bring them forward!"
----------
Maybe they will respond flexibly?!
The representative is also in the middle of raising children?!
Thinking this, I decided to consult with the representative!!!
But... just saying "This is what I want to do!" would be selfish, wouldn't it?
I decided to also convey my thoughts about the current company.
"I want to create a workplace that is easier to work in, not just for myself, but for the women I work with now and those who will work with us in the future."
There are many nurses who are moms raising young children.
I am the only mom in the rehabilitation department, but more junior staff have gotten married this year, and there is a possibility they will become moms in the future...
Both I and other moms are working full-time as a matter of course, but if there were options, some might choose them.
By doing so, I might have more leeway, more time to face my family, and the atmosphere might become better than it is now. (In my family's case)
As a company, while a decrease in sales due to reduced hours is unavoidable, it can avoid the trouble and risk of hiring new people.
I want to ensure that people don't have to give up their jobs because of their work style.
It seems that over 1,000 new offices are established annually in the home-visit nursing station industry where I work. However, it seems that about half of them find it difficult to continue within a year.
In such a tough industry, in a society with a labor shortage, I believe that companies that are kind not only to users but also to employees can survive and prosper.
I like the representative's policy at my current company, so I want to continue working there even if my work style changes.
(My ideal is 50-60% main job, 40-50% own business)
So, I reached out to the representative and had a meeting!
Since I asked so suddenly, they thought I was going to say I was quitting. Lol
They listened to me very carefully and said, 'There was a time when we did that, but for various reasons, we stopped. But as you said, Sakimiki-san, having various ways of working makes it easier for all kinds of people to work, doesn't it?'
The result...
They agreed to consider it positively while consulting with a labor and social security attorney about the salary side of things!!!
I'm just grateful that they are willing to consider it for now!!!
This has become quite long, so I'll continue this next time☆
I'm also talking about this on Stand.fm, so please listen if you'd like♪
