Walking through Takegawara-koji, home to Japan's oldest arcade | A journey through famous hot springs and gourmet food (Beppu)
I visited Takegawara-koji in Beppu (Oita), which features the oldest existing arcade in Japan.
My family has a hotel we always stay at in Beppu, and I stopped by on the way there. The atmosphere of the wooden arcade and the neon lights was so beautiful that I was deeply moved.
JR Kyushu 883 Series Sonic
It takes about 3 hours from Nagoya to Kokura by Shinkansen, and about 1 hour from Kokura to Beppu by the Sonic express. It's a relatively simple route, so it's less tiring to travel than I expected.

Kumahachi Aburaya / In front of Beppu Station
This statue with an interesting pose is located in front of the station. This is Kumahachi Aburaya, known as the 'Father of Beppu Tourism.' Without him, the name of Beppu might not have spread nationwide. He must be a 'god' in Beppu. The striking pose of the statue leaves a lasting impression.

Beppu Station Market
Located under the station's elevated tracks (on the south side) is the Beppu Station Market. They sell side dishes, fruits, fish, and more; for example, you could buy something here to eat at your hotel.

Sol Paseo Ginza

Takegawara-koji
Completed in 1921 (Taisho 10), this is the oldest existing arcade in Japan. It is certified as a Modern Industrial Heritage site. The lighting made with Beppu bamboo crafts is impressive.

Takegawara Onsen
Emerging from the end of Takegawara-koji is Takegawara Onsen, a municipal public hot spring. It is a symbolic presence of Beppu Onsen. It is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and a Modern Industrial Heritage site.
The bathing fee is just 100 yen. There are many such public hot springs throughout the city of Beppu.

Robata Jin
For dinner, I went to this restaurant on the street in front of Beppu Station. The food, including seafood and other local ingredients, was delicious. I especially liked the Hiji pork spare ribs and the Ryukyu rice bowl.

・Ryukyu Rice Bowl
Although it has the name Ryukyu, it seems to be a local dish of Oita. It is made by soaking fresh fish like mackerel or horse mackerel in a marinade containing soy sauce and ginger, and it was incredibly delicious.

After finishing my meal, I walked around the streets of Beppu at night for a bit. It's fun to walk around taking pictures of the neon-lit streets.
Beppu Tower
The third high-rise tower built in Japan, following the Nagoya TV Tower and Tsutenkaku. There is something nostalgic about this form. I climbed up to the observation deck the next day.

It becomes even more charming at night. It is a wonderful arcade.

A gelato shop that stays open late at night. You can stop by on your way home from drinking. A stylish gentleman served me.

Topic: "Favorite Town"
When I arrived in Beppu three years ago, I retreated to my hotel immediately and didn't walk around the city at all. This time, I realized once again how interesting this city is. Beppu at night is glamorous and wonderful. I have added another favorite town to my list.
