3 Mindsets That Helped Me Stop Comparing Myself to Others and Feeling Down
"Why can't I do this..."
The moment I open social media, I compare myself to someone and feel down.
Are you wearing yourself out by repeating that cycle?
Good morning ☕️ I'm Ru-Nurse 😊
While working as a nurse, I'm taking on the challenge of "ChatGPT x Side Hustle" with the goal of eventually "graduating from nursing."
I hated myself for feeling down
To be honest, it was an everyday occurrence for me to compare myself to others and feel down.
"That person who started the same side hustle is already getting results."
"My friends on social media look like they're having fun, but I'm just exhausted."
I would compare myself like that and end up searching for all my flaws.
Before I knew it, I had decided on my own that "it's impossible for me."
Back then, my heart always felt heavy, and I would put on a fake smile to pretend I was fine...
I couldn't stop the act of "comparing" itself
In my head, I knew that "comparing myself to others is meaningless."
But my emotions were honest, and before I knew it, I would be scrolling and feeling down.
Even while feeling down, I would keep looking at social media and end up self-denigrating again.
I couldn't escape that loop, and it just made me feel even more miserable.
"I want to stop comparing, but I can't."
I hated myself for that, and my self-esteem dropped even further.
The "3 Mindsets" that became a turning point
Still, one day, I thought, "I don't want to keep feeling down anymore."
The three mindsets I practiced little by little at that time saved me.
I'm sharing them here, so if you are also feeling miserable from comparing yourself, I hope you'll try at least one of them 🌱
1. Change the person you compare yourself to from others to "your past self"
On social media, there are infinite, countless people who are better than you.
No matter how hard you try, more people who are achieving better results will appear one after another.
So, what I consciously changed was to compare myself to my "past self" instead of "others."
I wrote an article a little faster than yesterday
I'm able to organize my thoughts better than a week ago
My side hustle has become a habit compared to a month ago
When you notice "small growth" like that, strangely enough, your feelings become much lighter 😊
2. View 'feeling down' as a 'sign that you want to grow'
When you compare yourself to others and feel down, it is actually proof that your heart is crying out, 'I want to be like that too.'
In other words, feeling down is not a bad thing; it is a 'moment where you are being shown your future potential.'
Once I started viewing it that way, I was able to think of
'feeling down' as the 'starting line for growth.'
Every time you feel down, if you can think, 'I have a desire to grow,' you can become more positive✨
3. Give yourself permission to 'share even if you aren't perfect'
When we compare ourselves and feel down, it is often because we think, 'I am not perfect yet.'
But even the people who are actually achieving results weren't perfect from the start.
I also wrote articles with clumsy writing at first.
Even so, there were people who read them, and people who left comments or clicked 'like'.
What I learned from that experience is that
'there is a view that only those who start can see, even if they aren't perfect.'
Rather than stopping your hands because you feel down, moving forward even if you are imperfect will get you much further ahead🙌
Even I, who thought it was impossible, was able to change
Since I became conscious of these three ways of thinking, the time I spend feeling down has decreased significantly.
Of course, there are still moments when I compare myself to others.
But 'it's okay if I compare myself to my past self,'
'feeling down is proof that I want to grow,'
'it's okay to move forward even if I'm not perfect.'
Just being able to think that way made my heart feel so much lighter😊
What I want to tell you
If you are feeling down right now because you are comparing yourself to someone, please start by praising yourself for today.
The fact that you are trying to move forward even a little.
The fact that you are reading this article to the end.
That alone is proof enough that you have the 'self you want to become' within you🌙
It's okay. You are not alone, and you will definitely be able to move forward after overcoming the nights when you feel down from comparing yourself to others.
Thank you for reading this far😊
If you thought this was helpful, I would be very encouraged if you could leave a like or a comment✨
If you could also share your own 'experience of feeling down from comparing yourself to others,' I think it could help save others' feelings too🌱
