[Shoichi IDA] - We provide appraisal, authentication, and purchase services for limited edition prints, etchings, aquatints, and more.
Shoichi Ida was a Japanese post-war artist who, starting from printmaking, expanded his expression into painting, mixed media, and objects.
Consistently running through his work was a perspective that questioned the very structure of the world, such as "space," "gravity," "vertical and horizontal," and "inside and outside."
The word "Between," which frequently appears in his work titles, symbolizes Ida's creative stance.
It was an attempt to visualize as form the elusive tension and fluctuation that arise between form and form, between two-dimensional and three-dimensional, between nature and artifice, or between thought and sensation.

Profile
Shoichi Ida was born in 1941.
He began his career in the 1960s focusing on printmaking, and while basing his work on print techniques such as etching, aquatint, and silkscreen, he gradually expanded his field of expression to include mixed media and objects.
From the 1970s onwards, he exhibited his work both in Japan and abroad, establishing his reputation with works that were abstract yet highly structural.
From the 1980s onwards, he incorporated materials such as Japanese paper (washi), stone, and metal, developing a body of work that blurred the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional.
From Printmaking to Mixed Media
Shoichi Ida was an artist who placed great importance on copperplate printmaking techniques such as etching and aquatint.
The texture of lines created by soft ground and drypoint, and the shading of space created by aquatint, formed the foundation of his artistic language.
On the other hand, in his works from the 1980s onwards, he began to use methods that went beyond the framework of printmaking, such as drawing on Japanese paper and mounting it on panels, or combining stone and bronze.
This was not a rejection of printmaking as a "reproducible medium," but rather an expression of his stance to expand the very concept of the print.
