Genichiro Inokuma is one of the representative painters of modern Japanese Western-style painting, having developed significantly from figurative to abstract art.
Colorful and free abstract works, approachable motifs like "faces" and "cats," and murals such as the one at Ueno Station—
I am sure many of you have seen his work somewhere at least once.
However, in reality, these are the common questions we receive during consultations:
・ "I don't know if this is a print or an original work."
・ "I bought it a long time ago, but how much is it worth now?"
・ "I've seen similar works, but is the value different?"
To be honest, Genichiro Inokuma's works are
👉 “an artist whose work is difficult to judge by appearance alone.”
The reason for this is that
he has a wide range of styles from figurative to abstract
he uses many techniques such as oil painting, works on paper, and prints
the evaluation changes significantly even for the same motif
are characteristics of his work.

Furthermore, in the market,
prints ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yen
works on paper ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of yen
oil paintings in the millions to 10 million yen class
and so, he is an artist with a very wide price range.
In other words,
👉 he is an artist whose works are viewed as completely different items rather than "expensive/cheap because it's an Inokuma."
▶ So, what is looked at to make a judgment?
Appraisals mainly look at these areas.
・Production period (especially the New York period)
・Motif (faces, cats, abstract, etc.)
・Technique (oil painting/works on paper/prints)
・Signature, edition, and information on the back
・Exhibition history and gallery provenance
It is much easier to understand these points by looking at them alongside actual market data rather than just explaining them in text.

▶ Finally
"Is this worth anything?"
"I haven't decided whether to sell it yet, but..."
It is perfectly fine to be at that stage.
📷 If you send two photos from your smartphone of:
・The entire work
・The signature or the back

🎨 Kaii Higashiyama as an artist is a genre that is highly trusted in the market, not just popular among collectors. In particular, works on silk and representative motifs have stable market prices.
“Is this a reproduction? Or is it...”
“Is it time to sell?”
In such cases, a smartphone photo is fine to start with. Please feel free to consult with us.
It is okay even if you are still in the undecided stage.
With an appraisal by a professional dealer, you can rest assured that we will discuss everything, including the background of the work and its market value.
📷 It is best to have two photos: one of the entire work and one of the signature/tomo-seal.
