◎ What kind of artist is Rafflewski?

Rolf Rafflewski (1943–2020) was a painter and printmaker born in Hanau, Germany, to a family of Polish descent. He began drawing as a boy and showed talent early on, holding his first solo exhibition at the age of 16. While training in graphic design at an advertising studio, he studied at the National Academy of Drawing in Hanau and the School of Design in Offenbach. He began his career in the rigorous world of professional illustration, eventually opening his own studio as an advertising painter and designer.

He visited Paris in the early 1960s and, after continuing to draw and paint on the streets of Montmartre, eventually settled in France. He became known for capturing everyday scenes of Paris—such as the banks of the Seine, bridges, and squares—with his own unique sensibility. From around 1970, he began working seriously on lithographs, producing numerous works that colorfully depicted cities around the world, including Paris, the castles of the Loire, Normandy, the Côte d'Azur, as well as Venice, New York, Japan, and Hong Kong.

He actively held exhibitions at galleries both in and outside of France, and his work is held in the Prints and Photographs Department of the National Library of France (BnF) as of 1973, marking him as an artist with a recognized place in the history of modern French printmaking.

◎ Characteristics of his work: Glamorous cityscapes and meticulously drawn architecture

The appeal of Rafflewski's work lies above all in the fact that the city itself is the protagonist.
In Paris, he depicts the streetscapes along the Seine—such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Pont Saint-Michel, the Avenue de l'Opéra, the Île de la Cité, and the Île Saint-Louis—with soft light and colorful hues.

In his canvas works, he uses somewhat thick brushstrokes to distinguish between buildings and water surfaces, creating a pleasant sense of wanderlust through the contrast between the color of the sky and the city lights.

His prints (lithographs and silkscreens) are characterized by a clearer, poster-like composition. The outlines of bridges and buildings stand out sharply, and the sky and water surfaces spread out as vivid planes of color, resulting in pieces that are highly suitable for interior decoration.
