A morning I didn't expect to be so moved by just one acoustic guitar

To be honest, it was the worst morning.

Sleepy, cold, and feeling foggy. Even coffee didn't bring me back to life.

That was when, for some reason, a video popped up on YouTube:

a live acoustic performance by Eddie Vedder.

“Well, this will do for background music while I work,”

I thought as I hit play.

…The result?

I was genuinely chilled.

Just one acoustic guitar. No flashy production.

Yet, the atmosphere changed completely.

There’s something mysterious about his voice.

The pitch is accurate, but it wavers just a little.

It’s not perfect. But that’s what makes it feel so good.

It feels like he isn’t trying to sing well.

“I am here, alive, and singing right now,”

is what his voice seems to say.

What’s more, the audience reacted naturally,

and before I knew it, they were in a call-and-response state.

Even though he’s a rock star,

he doesn’t seem like a “star” at all.

If anything, it's closer.

It's close, yet overwhelming.

Watching this, I realized something.

I play music too, but

honestly, I'm not good at re-recording things over and over.

I usually do it in one take.

I put it out at about 60 percent completion.

But sometimes, people say it's 'good' anyway.

I've always wondered why.

I'm not that good, so why?

Watching this Eddie, I feel like I finally understand.

Maybe—

“正しさ”より“体温”なんだ。

うまいかどうかより、

本気かどうか。

整ってるかより、

生きてるかどうか。

Rock isn't about

having loud sounds.

It's not about layering a bunch of guitars either.

In the end,

it's just your voice and your resolve.

That's all.

I encountered an unexpected masterpiece this morning,

I feel a bit better now.

I guess it's okay to be like this today.

It was music that made me feel that way.
