The Power to "See" People
One of the things I wanted to do this year is about to be achieved.
Among the 10 items I set at the beginning of the year, one was "create promotional photos."
When I asked a photographer I know about it the other day, they gladly accepted.
During our correspondence regarding this shoot, there was something that really impressed me.
I had thought that a photo shoot was just a matter of coordinating a date and time, then on the day of, snapping some photos and saying, "Alright, good work."But apparently, that wasn't the case.
"What do you want to use them for?"
"How do you want to be seen?"
"Indoors? Outdoors?"
I see, so you confirm a certain direction in advance.
Certainly, if you don't align your images, you might end up with something like, "This isn't what I wanted."
However, as we continued our exchange, the questions reached quite deep levels.
"Are you a writer who writes about what you feel? Or a writer as an interviewer?"
"What is the image you want to aim for?"
"Could you show me what kind of things you write on note?"
Whoa, you're asking that much? No, I don't mind at all, but...
We're talking about a photo shoot, right? Is this right? Am I right?
In the end, we decided to have a meeting on Zoom at a later date.
The Zoom meeting took about an hour.
The image I want to be and the image others see are not necessarily the same.
And it is better to narrow the gap between those images as much as possible.
Images change drastically depending on color and silhouette.
From various perspectives, she is thinking about how to photograph me.
I see, she is 'charming' people.
Not just 'seeing' them, but 'charming' them.
It is not just about obtaining visual information. She tries to draw out the charm that the other person possesses (or that is hidden within them) to the maximum extent. She must be utilizing that power to 'charm' in her work as a photographer.
'Well, there are some people who don't like this kind of thing. I've even had people turn me down, saying, "If that's the vibe, I'll pass,"' she says.
However, isn't a photographer who engages with you this sincerely truly wonderful?
She expresses what she thinks frankly (of course, without being harsh), and her enthusiasm to 'do a good job!' comes across clearly.
After all, people who give their all are likable and incredibly cool.
Even though we haven't done the shoot yet, I am truly glad I hired her.
The importance of the power to 'charm' people. Couldn't the same be said for the writing profession?
When writing something, you draw out the charm of the subject and structure the text so that its appeal is fully conveyed.
If I were to use a cooking analogy, it's like the image of 'selecting fresh ingredients from the market and preparing them in a way that makes them delicious to eat.'
I feel that without this power, neither a photographer nor a writer can do a good job.
I don't know how much of this power to 'charm' people I have, and I don't quite grasp how to train it either.
However, I am convinced that the whole process regarding this shoot is teaching me something important.
