Things to Know When Quoting: Copyright
When writing an article, there are times you may want to quote other articles or videos. While things are relatively relaxed within note, as a general rule, you normally need permission to use someone else's copyrighted work. However, by using a citation format, it is possible to quote if you follow the rules.
When I worked as a web writer for a while, the rules regarding copyright and citations were quite strict. Copyright is truly serious. It even reached a point where a certain site was banned for use across our entire company because writers were overusing it. Some of you may already know this, but for those who don't, I will introduce how to quote without infringing on copyright.
[The 5 Principles of Quoting]
1. Clearly distinguish which parts are being quoted
2. Clearly state the source of the quote
3. Do not modify or process the quoted material
4. Do not overuse quotes to the point where they fill up most of your article
5. Ensure there is relevance to your article
It may seem difficult, but basically, as long as you don't overuse them and clearly state which parts were quoted from where, you won't have any major problems. However, unauthorized reproduction of works by famous people is prohibited.
🌟YouTube Videos
These are things that anyone can see, and it is okay to introduce them in your article by posting a link. Overusing them for advertising revenue purposes is not allowed. If it is a video created by the person themselves, there is no problem, but since some videos are uploaded illegally without the creator's permission, please check before quoting. Captures are treated as images and copyright applies, so they must be used in a way that follows the principles above.
🌟Quoting Lyrics
Basically, copyright fees apply. However, for personal use or on social media, posting just one phrase is generally not considered a problem. Also, it is possible to quote lyrics if you use the same citation format as text, but in this case, your article must be the main content and the lyrics must be supplementary. For example, writing an analysis of the lyrics or including detailed information about the singer.
🌟Quoting note Articles
Basically, on note, posting articles is common as it allows people to see each other's work and fosters interaction. Creative works such as illustrations made by the person themselves basically belong to that person. If it is absolutely necessary, please get their permission first. Images created for a project are often okay to use if they are related to the project article (check the specified rules). That said, copyright is not waived, so it is good manners to clearly indicate the citation when using them.
If you know the rules, it's not that difficult.
Please be careful, as violating the rules in a project article could potentially affect the entire project.
I hope you can have a pleasant and fun note life while observing good manners~ (* ॑꒳ ॑*)ノ
