Title: The Final Boss of the Bicycle Parking Lot

The bicycle parking lot after school is a little quiet.

Between the rows of bicycles,
the sweet scent of taiyaki drifts.

"Here."

You hold out a paper bag.

It's still warm.

"Did you just buy this?"

"Yeah."

When I break the taiyaki in half,
steam rises softly.

"But you know,"

you suddenly put on a serious face.

"This quest ends today."

"A quest?"

"The thing called high school life."

I laugh.

"What's that, like a game?"

You shrug your shoulders.

"Because, you know,
it won't end unless you defeat the final boss."

Saying that, you look down at your uniform's chest.

The second button.

The wind blows.

The roof of the bicycle parking lot rattles faintly.

With a slightly embarrassed look, you unfastened the button.

"Here."

You hold it out to me.

"Keep it a secret, okay?"

Those words
were as small as a secret spell.

The sweetness of the taiyaki,
the evening light,
and the slightly early spring breeze.

Perhaps,
this moment was—

the true final boss of high school life.
