[Amano Writing Club] Not Enough Romance | Short Short

Title: Not Enough Romance

This town has a slightly unusual local custom.

It is to play "house" before falling in love.

Decide on roles,
pretend to cook a meal,
pretend to serve tea,
and act out a small life together.

If you can laugh at that,
the two of you can become lovers.

But for me, it never seemed to go well.

The role of serving tea,
the role of going shopping,
for some reason, I always get awkward halfway through.

"You know,"

he says, sitting across from me.

"Don't you think you lack romance?"

I get annoyed.

"Well, what about you?"

He shrugs his shoulders.

"The thing that doesn't stop is what you call romantic."

Saying that, he suddenly stands up.

"Let's stop playing house."

"Huh?"

"Because this is just practice, right?"

Outside the window was a sunset.

The wind shakes the curtains.

He laughs.

"The real thing is much more chaotic."

I think for a moment, then
I chuckle.

The local custom of this town
is probably not meant to make love go well.

It just
gives you the courage to start love.

And in that moment,
I thought.

What I lack is romance.
But—

what doesn't stop
is, after all, romantic.
