Talking, talking, talking
I believe that one of the major reasons humanity has been able to form such a massive society is our ability to converse and communicate with one another.
In our daily lives, conversation is an indispensable element. From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep at night, we exchange information, share emotions, and build relationships through dialogue with family, friends, and colleagues. However, this act of conversation, which we take for granted, has actually played a crucial role in the development of humanity.
✅ Conversation as Communication
Conversation is more than just an exchange of information. It is also a powerful means of connecting people. Through conversation, we try to convey our thoughts and feelings to others and understand their perspectives. In this process, sometimes the truth is spoken, and sometimes a kind of "shared lie" is born.
The "shared lie" referred to here does not necessarily mean a malicious falsehood. Rather, it refers to concepts and values shared within a society, culture, or specific group. For example, nations, religions, or corporate cultures could, in a sense, be called "shared lies." While these are not necessarily objective facts, they play a role in strengthening social cohesion as many people believe in their existence and share them.
By sharing such concepts through conversation and deepening our mutual understanding, we are able to form and maintain large-scale societies. By exchanging words, we recognize our differences while simultaneously finding common ground. This serves as the foundation for enhancing social cohesion and building cooperative relationships.
✅ Brain Chemicals Released When Talking
Interestingly, engaging in conversation also has a significant impact on our brains. It is known that conversation promotes the secretion of three specific brain chemicals: dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins.
Dopamine is known as a "pleasure chemical." When we gain new information during a conversation or receive a positive reaction from the other person, dopamine is released in the brain. This makes us feel joy in the conversation itself and increases our motivation for further communication.
Oxytocin is also called the "love hormone" and has the effect of deepening bonds with others. Intimate conversations or dialogues with people we trust stimulate the secretion of oxytocin. As a result, our sense of trust and intimacy with the other person increases, allowing us to build deeper human relationships.
Endorphins are natural painkillers produced within the body that contribute to stress reduction and increased feelings of happiness. Enjoyable conversations or communication involving laughter promote the secretion of these endorphins. This allows us to feel relaxed both mentally and physically after a conversation.
Through the secretion of these brain chemicals, we can maintain mental health, reduce stress, and increase happiness through conversation. In other words, conversation is not just a means of exchanging information, but an important activity that directly affects our physical and mental well-being.
✅ Summary
Conversation is an essential element for the formation and development of human society. It goes beyond mere exchange of words, possessing the power to form shared concepts and values and strengthen social cohesion. Furthermore, conversation influences the secretion of our brain chemicals and plays an important role in maintaining our physical and mental health.
Perhaps we should enjoy conversation more consciously and actively in our daily lives. Dialogues with family and friends, communication in the workplace, and even casual chats with strangers actually enrich our lives and make society as a whole more robust.
By reaffirming the importance of exchanging words and striving for richer communication, we will be able to build a healthier and more cohesive society. Believing in the power of conversation and cherishing daily dialogue leads to individual happiness and the development of society.
