There are things you see when you are cornered

I once had the experience of raising children alone for 10 years while working full-time.
It all started when my wife was transferred to a job in another city.

Many people might be able to rely on their own parents in a situation like this.
However, in my case, my mother had already passed away, and my father was in poor health and living in a care facility.

✅ Weekdays are a continuous battle

Fortunately, I was able to get a little help from my wife's parents.
When I couldn't make it to daycare in time to pick up the kids due to work, they would go instead. I don't know what I would have done without that help...

Since my wife's parents ran a yakitori restaurant, I couldn't ask them to watch the kids for long periods.
Every day, as soon as I finished work, I would rush to the restaurant to pick up the children.

From there, I would finish the shopping and head home with the kids.
I would immediately prepare the bath and then start making dinner without a moment's rest.
I believed that 'people can't have energy if they don't eat,' so I placed special importance on meals. It was only then that I realized how difficult it is to think of a daily menu.
Come to think of it, I suddenly remember my mother often asking me when I was a student, 'What do you want to eat for dinner tonight?'

After dinner, the three of us—my daughter, my son, and I—would take a bath together.
The apartment we lived in at the time didn't have a reheating function for the bath, so it was most efficient to get in all at once.
However, thanks to that, it became a precious time for parent-child communication, where we would talk about what happened at school and daycare.

After the bath, it was our family's usual relaxing time.
Since they wouldn't get sleepy right after the bath, we would spend time watching anime on SKY PerfecTV, which I was subscribed to at the time, or DVDs I rented from TSUTAYA until the children naturally got sleepy.
After about two hours, the children would start to get drowsy, so we would go to the bedroom together and I would put them to sleep.
I wasn't good at reading picture books at first, but once I got used to it, I was able to read them by acting out the characters.

✅ Peace on weekends

On weekends, my wife would return from her job transfer location. I remember feeling truly relieved, as it was a time for the children, and for me, to finally rest.

To be precise, it was routine for the three of us to excitedly welcome my wife home around 9 p.m. on Friday, as she would leave as soon as she finished work.
It was a moment when I truly realized how much easier things are when there are two pairs of adult hands.

Only at these times would the children say, 'I want to take a bath with Mom!', so I could finally have a moment to soak in the tub alone.
Also, she would help me with buying children's clothes, which I was bad at, and cut my son's nails.
Even now, I am truly grateful for that kind of thoughtful support from my wife.

As much as the holidays were fun, Monday mornings were very painful and lonely times.
My wife would stay home until the very last minute after dinner on Sunday before returning to her job transfer location.
It broke my heart to see my son cry every time. I remember that until I got used to it, I had a very hard time helping the children recover from their sadness.

✅ Summary

I wonder if many fathers in the world don't realize how much they rely on their wives.

Through this experience, I understood painfully well why wives complain about their husbands 'not doing' housework or childcare.
Raising children has a level of difficulty that cannot be expressed in words.

However, because I experienced that difficulty, I now believe I have found something irreplaceable that ordinary fathers often overlook.
