I don't need the formality

Yesterday was Father's Day.
My family gave me my favorite food and a gift from my son.
But it's also true that I felt a little lonely.
I spent almost the entire day yesterday all by myself.

✅ As you get older, you stop wanting things

My son asked me beforehand what I wanted for Father's Day, but I just couldn't come up with anything I wanted.
I mean, there are things, but they aren't really gift material (like an iPhone or a MacBook, for example).
Besides, I have enough for my daily life, so there isn't anything I particularly want. I worried about it a lot, and the only thing I could come up with was that I thought I might like the coffee beans I drink every day, so I had them get me coffee beans.
Also, my wife asked me what I wanted for dinner, but at this age, there isn't anything I particularly want to eat. Honestly, rice with natto would have been fine, but that wouldn't feel like Father's Day, so I asked for the eel we usually order.

✅ Just being able to laugh together is enough

But looking back, I think what I really wanted was time spent together as a family.
I am very happy about what my son and wife did for me, but I felt a little guilty that I couldn't give them the joy of having given me a gift because I'm not good at showing my happiness.
However, what I really wanted most might have been to just sip tea together and chat happily as a family.
Yesterday, my wife and son went out to prepare the gifts and food, and I was incredibly lonely spending the day alone at home.

When you've spent some time in middle age, you realize you hardly want anything, and I thought that being together as a family is the greatest gift of all.
If there is a next year, I intend to communicate that clearly.
