Drowsiness and the Body's Voice
There are moments when my consciousness drifts away.
The words in the documents during a meeting lose their meaning, as if they were in a language from a country I don't know, and they begin to flow by as mere black patterns.
In a cafe bathed in gentle afternoon sunlight, the sound of a friend talking turns into pleasant background music, and my eyelids slowly begin to droop.
An irresistible wave of drowsiness.
It was a quiet, yet absolute demand from my body, independent of my own will.
It intervenes in my daily life without mercy, as if a debt collector I had been ignoring for so long had finally started knocking on my front door.
✅ Getting sleepy at odd times
The time when that demand becomes most urgent is while driving.
A country road with gentle curves and one lane in each direction.
The music from the stereo and the breeze blowing through the window all become invitations to sleep.
For just a few seconds, my consciousness lapses.
When I snap back to reality, I realize the car has crossed the center line just a little, and my spine freezes.
I can't keep going like this.
Even though my head understands that, once the afternoon arrives after lunch, my body honestly craves rest.
It reaches the point where I cannot safely reach my destination unless I take a thirty-minute nap at a service area.
This intense daytime drowsiness is like a ticking time bomb.
You never know when or where it will explode.
In the middle of a conversation with someone important, during a work situation that requires focus, or at the climax of a movie I was looking forward to.
Regardless of the place or situation, my body honestly sends a signal that it has reached its limit.
Continuing to ignore that signal is like driving a car with broken brakes down a highway, and a vague anxiety that I will eventually pay a heavy price for it constantly smolders somewhere in my heart.
✅ Able to wake up early in the morning
Strangely enough, despite being hit by such drowsiness during the day, my mornings are surprisingly early.
The habit of morning activities that I have continued for over a decade is ingrained to the marrow of my bones.
Even if I stay up late and go to bed past one in the morning, my body dutifully wakes me up at five.
Before the alarm even rings, I feel the signs of the sky outside the window beginning to turn white, and my consciousness naturally surfaces.
When I was young, I was proud of this early rising.
Being able to start the day earlier than others, and being able to focus on things during the quiet morning hours.
That was definitely a huge advantage for me.
However, as I have aged, this habit has become like a stubborn curse.
Even if my heart cries out that I want to sleep more and make up for last night's lack of sleep, my body tells me it's time to get up and won't listen.
Even if I try to go back to sleep through sheer willpower, my head is wide awake, and I just spend time idly in bed.
The rhythm I have carved into my body over many years now easily overrides my will and starts my day on autopilot.
✅ Want to sleep and wake up at the right time
The term "sleep debt" weighs heavily on me.
The daytime drowsiness and the lack of focus are likely all caused by this debt.
I must pay it back.
To do that, I need to regain a very normal life rhythm: sleeping properly at night when I should, and waking up in the morning when I should.
I know it in my head.
Keep the smartphone that causes me to stay up late away from the bedroom, relax my mind and body with a warm drink, and create an environment that invites sleep.
I have more than enough knowledge about how to get a good night's sleep.
But is it really this difficult to change the body's rhythm created by years of habit using only reason?
We tend to believe that we can control our bodies with the power of our will.
However, as I continue this struggle with drowsiness, the question arises: is that really true?
Perhaps the body is a much wiser and more honest partner than we think.
The irresistible daytime drowsiness might not just be a sign of sleep deprivation, but a sincere message from the body asking, "Is your current way of life really sustainable for you?"
Listen to that voice, engage in dialogue, and build a new rhythm together.
What I should be facing might not be the drowsiness itself, but the relationship with this body—the most familiar and yet most difficult-to-understand existence.
