Thinking about my approach to work
I have been working ever since I started my first job at 18.
Compared to those days, I feel that the meaning of "working" has become something completely different recently.
Back then, it was taken for granted that you would become a company employee and work, and it felt normal to come in early, work overtime, and work on holidays.
However, I have come to have a completely different way of thinking now.
✅ Turning point: Before depression
The biggest turning point in my working life was developing depression.
Here, I would like to write about my approach to work before that.
Since I joined my previous company straight out of high school, I learned the ropes of being a working professional there.
My family home was primarily a farm, so this was really the first time I experienced the life of a salaryman firsthand.
It was the late bubble era, and the mindset was that overtime, coming in early, and working on holidays were normal; while I do feel the pay was good, I had a constant feeling of being mentally worn down.
In the end, that led to me developing depression...
✅ Turning point: After depression
After developing depression, I took a leave of absence and returned to work for a while, but since I had a strong feeling that I didn't want to be there anymore, I resigned for the first time and experienced my first job change.
What became clear to me there was that company cultures differ.
It was a big deal to be able to learn that.
I learned for the first time that what I thought was common sense only applied within that specific company.
I felt at that time that there are things you just don't know if you start working right after graduation and only ever know that one company.
In the end, I changed jobs several more times after that, which leads to the work I do now.
✅ Summary
Having gained that experience, I've realized that while it is important to rethink "work," it is not the number one priority.
This might differ from person to person, but for me, the number one priority was my Life—in other words, the quality of life outside of work.
That also includes the happiness of my family.
I feel like I am moving forward to pursue that now.
