Things You Never Imagined Become Troubles

When you live a long life, troubles happen from time to time.
However, they come from places you never expected at all.
For example, it's like walking carefully while watching out for potholes in the road, only to have a meteorite fall from the sky.

We live our lives predicting a certain amount of risk.
"This road is dark, so I'll watch my step," or "This job has a tight deadline, so I'll start early."
That is how we strive to avoid the "potholes" that appear before us.
That in itself is very important and wise.

However, what truly knocks us down in life is not those "potholes."
It is the "meteorites" that fly in without any warning, completely outside our awareness and beyond our range of assumptions.

In this article, I would like to delve a little deeper into why we are struck by "unexpected" events and how we should face those "meteorites."

✅ Humans are creatures that make assumptions

Why can't we notice the existence of these "meteorites"?
One major reason is that we are "creatures that make assumptions."

Based on our past experiences and knowledge, we build something like "laws of the world" within ourselves.
"A leads to B," "C will never happen." We unconsciously accumulate countless such laws and use them as a standard to judge things.
This is, so to speak, an energy-saving feature for the brain to process information efficiently.
If we were to verify every single possibility, we would never be able to move forward.

However, this convenient energy-saving feature sometimes becomes the cause of significantly narrowing our perspective.

For example, consider a system you always use at work.
If you are ingrained with the rule of thumb that "pressing this button does this," you might not notice that the system specifications were suddenly updated one day, leading to a serious mistake.
Or, you might assume that a person who is always calm would never get angry over something like this, and end up saying something insensitive, leading to an irreparable situation.

These are all tragedies caused by the assumption that "my rules of thumb should continue to work."
The "normalcy bias" in psychology might be close to this.
We unconsciously underestimate dangerous possibilities, thinking, "I'll be fine" or "That sort of thing won't happen."

We are more bound by past successes and stereotypes than we think.
And as long as we view the world through the colored glasses of "assumptions," it is extremely difficult to notice the trajectory of "meteorites" flying in from outside our field of vision.

✅ The basic rule is to act assuming mistakes will happen

So, what should we, as creatures with the troublesome trait of "making assumptions," do?
Should we become perfect human beings and predict every possibility?

The answer is no. That is impossible.
What we should aim for is not "to be perfect," but "to accept imperfection."
In other words, we should understand that the basic rule is to act with the mindset that "mistakes will definitely happen."

This is by no means a careless attitude.
Rather, it is a very realistic and flexible approach to risk management. If you operate on the premise that "I won't make mistakes," you will panic when a mistake actually occurs, and your response will be delayed.
However, if you operate on the premise that "humans make mistakes, and I am no exception," you can prepare "mechanisms" to prevent mistakes before they happen, or "safeguards" to minimize damage after they occur.

For example, before sending an important email, read the recipient and content aloud to double-check. For a project you were working on alone, dare to have a third party look at it and ask for objective opinions.
When planning a trip, think of a plan for rainy weather, not just for sunny weather.

These are all actions that can only be taken because you have a healthy doubt that "things might not go well" and are operating on the premise that "mistakes will happen."

This way of thinking makes our hearts a little lighter.
It is because we are freed from the pressure of "having to be perfect" and can gain the peace of mind that "if something happens, there is a backup plan."
It is the image of continuing to carefully avoid potholes in the road while preparing a sturdy helmet for the meteorites that might fall from the sky.

✅ Summary

Our lives are made up of a combination of things we can predict and things we absolutely cannot.
We tend to be distracted by the "potholes" of daily life, but what truly has a major impact on our careers and lives is often the unexpected "meteorite."

The true nature of that meteorite is, in many cases, our own 'assumptions'.
Fixed ideas like 'it should be this way' or 'it ought to happen like this' narrow our perspective and delay our response to change.

That is precisely why it is important for us to acknowledge the fact that 'humans are creatures who make assumptions,' and based on that, adopt the fundamental stance of 'acting with the expectation that mistakes will happen.'
This could be called the most realistic wisdom for surviving in an uncertain world with flexibility.

Unexpected trouble may seem like an unfortunate event at first glance.
However, it is also a valuable opportunity that makes us aware of our own 'assumptions'.
By overcoming trouble and updating the 'laws' of our own world, we can become stronger and wiser.

We may not be able to avoid a direct hit from a meteorite 100% of the time.
However, we can prepare ourselves by keeping in mind that 'anything can happen' and being ready to respond flexibly.
That small awareness and preparation should be what saves us from the depths of despair and gives us the courage to take the next step.
