The Satisfaction of Being Useful to Others
Have you ever had the experience where a single "thank you" from someone filled your day with warm colors?
That deeply satisfying feeling that wells up from the depths of your heart when your modest actions unexpectedly lead to someone's smile.
Why do we find such joy in "being useful to others"?
It is not merely a fleeting mood or a product of chance.
The true nature of that warmth is deeply tied to the more fundamental mechanisms of our minds and bodies.
It may be the manifestation of a uniquely human, earnest, and beautiful wish to find oneself and weave the meaning of life through connections with others.
I would like to delve a little deeper into the depths of that satisfaction.
✅ To be able to believe in your own strength
We are not like lonely little boats floating in the vast ocean of society.
We are connected to others by invisible threads, living while confirming the outlines of ourselves within those relationships.
As psychologist Abraham Maslow showed in his "Hierarchy of Needs," once our safety is secured, we harbor a desire to belong to a group and be recognized by someone.
The act of being useful to others fulfills this fundamental craving for "belonging and recognition" in its purest form.
"Thank you for your help."
Those words have a resonance that proves you are an irreplaceable member of that community.
It is the light of a lighthouse that tells you your coordinates in society, giving you the peace of mind that "it is okay to be here."
And this feeling permeates even deeper into one's inner self.
"My actions had a positive impact on someone."
This tangible feedback enriches the soil of self-affirmation, the belief that "I am a valuable being capable of contributing to others and society."
It becomes a seed that nurtures not just the external measure of evaluation from others, but an inner confidence—self-efficacy—that "there are things I can do."
This feeling is nothing less than the source of the courage that drives us toward new challenges.
This series of mental movements is further accelerated by chemical reactions occurring within our brains.
When we are kind to someone or build a relationship of trust, oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone," is secreted in the brain, bringing feelings of happiness and security.
When we receive the social "reward" of gratitude, dopamine, the "motivation hormone," is released, sparking a desire for further contribution.
This phenomenon is also called a "helper's high," where the exhilaration brought by kind acts fills the heart much like a runner's high.
It may be a clever and gentle "reward" that our brains have prepared to encourage such behavior, knowing that "symbiosis with others is the most effective survival strategy."
The satisfaction gained from being useful to others thus becomes a reliable source of nourishment for believing in your own strength and taking a step toward tomorrow.
✅ But naturally, without overdoing it
However, if the light of this warm satisfaction is too strong, it can cast deep shadows.
The pure wish to "be useful to others" carries the danger of eventually transforming into the obsession that "if I am not useful to others, I have no value."
In the joy of meeting others' expectations, one may stop listening to the screams of their own mind and body.
That is the gateway to "excessive self-sacrifice."
You continue to devote yourself to others, chipping away at your own time, health, and emotions.
You may not even realize that the root of that behavior is no longer a pure desire to contribute, but a "fear of not being thanked" or "anxiety about being abandoned."
Before you know it, the word "thank you" becomes the sole metric for measuring your own worth, and when you don't receive it, your very existence feels shaken.
This is a dangerous addiction to the need for approval.
As you immerse yourself in helping others and taking on their problems, your heart wears thin and eventually burns out.
"Burnout syndrome" is when you can no longer feel any emotion toward things you were once so passionate about.
It is a void of the heart that arrives as a result of continuing to neglect yourself under the noble pretext of being there for others.
In the first place, you cannot fill others when your own vessel is empty.
Only when there is overflowing water can you share it with the thirsty vessel next to you.
The feeling of "wanting to be useful to others" should never be denied.
Rather, it is likely one of the most noble emotions humans possess.
However, as a major prerequisite, it is essential to first cherish and take care of yourself.
Know your limits and have the courage to say "no" at times.
This is by no means a selfish act, but a sincere form of self-defense necessary to build healthy relationships with others in the long term and continue contributing in a sustainable way.
Just as the sun continues to shine without burning itself out, we too want to be a light that gently illuminates our surroundings, naturally and within reasonable limits, while cherishing our own existence.
✅ Beyond that warmth
The satisfaction gained from "being useful to others."
It has an irresistible appeal that boosts self-affirmation, gives a sense of meaning to life, and brings happiness even from a neuroscience perspective.
Relying on this emotion like a compass, we strive to be better versions of ourselves through our interactions with others.
That endeavor will undoubtedly color life in rich ways.
But perhaps we need to return once more to the essence of that satisfaction.
Is what we are truly seeking the medal of gratitude or approval from others, awarded for the result of "having been useful"?
Or is it something quieter and more internal, found within the act itself?
Kindness that seeks no reward sometimes brings the deepest joy.
Known by no one, and not evaluated.
Even so, the fact that your actions created even the slightest positive change in a corner of the world.
Only that modest conviction remains in your heart.
It is a light of pure self-affirmation that does not pass through the filter of evaluation by others.
Through acting for the sake of others, we might actually be in dialogue with ourselves.
"How do I want to be?" "What do I want to cherish?"
Perhaps we are searching for the answers to those questions within the act of contribution.
If so, what we should face is not a heart that sways with the evaluations of others, but our own inner voice.
When you have been useful to someone, accept that warmth honestly.
And even if you don't get the reaction you expected, there is no need to be discouraged.
Because the warmth of the palm you extended and the movement of your heart that thought of someone else is the most precious truth of all.
If all words of gratitude and evaluation were to vanish from this world.
Would you still be able to gently reach out your hand for someone in front of you?
Would you be able to simply and quietly believe in the warmth that awaits beyond that act?
