It Makes a Big Difference Whether You Are Conscious of It or Not

When you get right down to it, perhaps there is not such a great difference in what we call human knowledge.
Of course, one should respect deep erudition in specialized fields and insights cultivated through many years of experience.
However, when you consider the total amount of information an individual can encounter in a lifetime, the ratio of what they know to what they do not know is no more than a drop in the ocean.
We are all merely owners of small islands of knowledge floating in a vast sea of ignorance.

So, what is it that separates us on the voyage of life?
Some people reach islands filled with joy, while others run aground on desolate reefs.
It seems to me that the compass that determines that fate does not depend on a magnet called the amount of knowledge, but simply on which way the needle called "consciousness" is pointing.
We steer our ships unconsciously in the direction that needle points, and the landscape of our lives is shaped quietly, yet decisively.

✅ Time moves forward regardless of how you are

Looking out the window, the clouds drift by, slowly changing shape.
Even while I sit at my desk spinning words like this, the second hand of the clock ticks with merciless precision, and the world continues to shift without pausing for even an instant.
Whether you are intoxicated by yesterday's success or crushed by past failures, time pushes forward toward the future as if it has nothing to do with us.
That is an absolute providence that cannot be resisted.

We often forget the flow of time itself while we are inside this great river.
We keep clutching the stones of regret cast upon the shore of the past, and we tremble at the shadows of anxiety looming on the opposite bank of the future.
All the while, the small boat we are riding is passing the moment called "now" and being swept downstream moment by moment.

When faced with this cold providence of time, we keenly feel our own helplessness.
However, at the same time, we should be able to realize one possibility.
It is the fact that even if we cannot change the flow itself, which way we face and what we look at within that flow is left entirely to our own freedom.
We can continue to lament the scenery that has passed, or we can tremble at the scenery we have yet to see.
Alternatively, we can simply turn our hearts quietly toward the sparkle on the water's surface that is flowing right before our eyes, never to return again.
Time moves forward regardless of how you are.
This stark fact is what makes the choice of "where to direct your consciousness in this very moment" so incredibly precious.

✅ Where do you direct your consciousness?

So, where should we point the needle of our consciousness?
Life has countless channels.
Some people tune into the "health" channel, finding joy in the colors of their daily meals or the pleasant fatigue gained from moving their bodies.
For them, life will be a journey of cherishing the vessel that is their own body and savoring its well-being.

Others focus their consciousness on the "money" channel.
They follow global economic news, are swayed by fluctuations in numbers, and pour their passion into building assets.
The landscape of their lives must be colored by the dynamism of the market and the sense of accomplishment in creating wealth through their own ingenuity.
Human relationships, hobbies, work, social contribution.
Depending on which channel you choose, the scenery you see, the sounds you hear, and the happiness you feel will be completely different.
There is no superiority or inferiority there; there is only choice.

Among those countless options, I chose to direct the majority of my consciousness toward "facing my own heart."
This is because, in the end, it is my own heart that receives and gives meaning to health, money, and human relationships.
No matter how wonderful the scenery you place yourself in, if your heart is clouded, you cannot see its beauty.
No matter how much wealth you obtain, if your heart is parched, you will never be satisfied.
I want to live by staying close to the one and only certain thing—the voice within myself—rather than the ever-shifting, uncertain things like external environments or the evaluations of others.
That is what I have come to wish for.

The practice for that, for me, is the act of writing down what comes to mind every day like this.
This is not just a diary.
It is a ritual to gently scoop up the nameless fluctuations of emotion and fragments of thought that occur within me.
By catching them with the net of words and observing them closely, I can finally have a dialogue with myself.
Why is my heart restless now?
What do I feel joy in, and what am I afraid of?
Through the act of writing, I become an observer and an understander of myself.
This quiet time of introspection is the light of a modest lighthouse illuminating the voyage of my life.

✅ Memories, that is how life is determined

Ten years from now, twenty years from now, or in the twilight of life, when you look back at your wake, what will remain there?
Perhaps what spreads out there will be a nautical chart called "memories."
And what determines the shapes of the continents and islands drawn on that chart is nothing other than the trajectory of where you have directed your consciousness until now.

On the nautical chart of a life that has only focused on calculating money, there may be an archipelago of dry, tasteless numbers.
If you have spent your life seeking approval from others, there may be a coastline drawn that is distorted by constantly watching other people's faces.

What will be drawn on my nautical chart?
I hope that what is there is not a monument to flashy success or a golden island that is a symbol of wealth.
The quiet surprise of facing my own heart and peering into its abyss.
The small joy of the moment I spun meaning out of chaos through words.
I want the wake of such inner exploration to be recorded—something I cannot boast about to anyone, but which is irreplaceable to me.
Life is not a collection of past events.
It is a beautiful tapestry woven by the sequence of moments where you shone the light of your consciousness and turned your heart toward them.

We are all riding a ship called time, which has been given to us equally, and we are traveling our respective seas.
There is no great difference in the amount of cargo called knowledge.
It is just a matter of where you, the captain on that ship, point the needle of your compass and which star you look up at to steer.

That is how life is determined.
Quietly, and irrevocably, and surely.
Now, which direction is the needle of your compass pointing quietly at this moment?
