The way we move differs between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Have you ever heard the terms "intrinsic motivation" and "extrinsic motivation"?
They are psychological terms, but they are concepts deeply rooted in our daily lives.
Simply put, it is the difference between whether something you do starts from your own inner impulse or is driven by external factors like rewards or punishments.
Do you pick up a pen of your own volition, or do you pick it up because someone ordered you to "write"?
Even if the act of "writing" is the same, if the root of it is different, the state of our minds, as well as the productivity and creativity born from it, will take on completely different aspects.
Much like the difference between a spring welling up from the bottom of a quiet lake and a waterfall falling from a cliff, these two motivations may be quietly, yet decisively, influencing the quality of our lives.
✅ The value of moving on your own
Have you ever had the experience of suddenly starting to organize your bookshelf on a holiday morning without anyone telling you to?
At first, you were just bothered by a corner that had become a little cluttered.
However, once you pick up one book, your attention shifts to the book next to it, and then to the book behind that.
You sort them by genre, arrange them by author, and pick up books with deep memories, flipping through the pages.
Before you know it, you forget the time and realize you are immersed in the act itself.
When the light coming through the window tilts and the shadows falling in the room grow long, you are wrapped in a deep sense of satisfaction and quiet accomplishment while looking at the neatly arranged bookshelf.
At this moment, what fills your heart is the true nature of the richness that intrinsic motivation brings.
When we move on our own, we become the "subject" of our actions.
It is close to the feeling of holding the rudder of the story called your life with your own hands.
The purpose, the means, and the joy obtained from it all belong to you.
That is why we can find meaning in it and become absorbed in it.
If you think about the world of hobbies, it will become clearer.
A boy assembling a plastic model all night, a painter spending every weekend finishing a single painting, a gardener continuing to work the soil in the garden day after day.
What drives them is not financial reward, nor is it social honor.
It is simply a pure and powerful inner impulse: "I do it because I want to do it."
This energy that wells up from within is surprisingly flexible and tenacious.
Even if you hit a wall, you won't break easily.
Rather, you even gain the leeway to enjoy that difficulty as a "challenge to be overcome," like a game.
Failure is not a punishment, but a valuable lesson for the next step.
This is because the entire journey is not something forced by someone else, but part of a story you chose yourself.
This feeling of "living my own story" is what gives us self-affirmation and becomes the soil that fosters spiritual growth.
The accumulation of experiences of moving on your own eventually sublimates into an unwavering confidence that "I can carve out my own life."
That value can be called a treasure of life, irreplaceable by any expensive reward.
✅ The pain of being moved by others
On the other hand, our daily lives are overflowing with experiences of being moved by others.
For many people, work might be the typical example of this.
You complete set tasks at a set time and in a set place.
Of course, there is a reward in the form of a salary in exchange for that, which is a powerful extrinsic motivation.
However, if you can only get a "feeling of being forced" from that work, how much would that drain your spirit?
On Monday morning, the footsteps dragging your heavy body toward the workplace.
Sitting in front of the computer, looking at the task list on the screen, you process them one by one, emotionlessly.
Your gaze is often drawn to the clock, and you let out a deep sigh as you measure the length of time until you can leave work.
Even if it is the same task, if it is an order from a boss or just a quota, our hearts drift away from it.
The feeling that your time and abilities are just being "consumed" for someone else's purpose, not your own.
That is accompanied by a quiet, yet certain, pain.
The root of this pain is likely the "absence of self."
The subject of the action is not you, but someone else.
There is no room to exercise your own will or creativity, and you are only required to fulfill your role as a "part" accurately and efficiently.
If this state continues, people gradually learn helplessness and lose the desire to think and act on their own.
Extrinsic motivation, especially negative motivation such as "if you don't do this, you will be punished," might move people in the short term.
However, in the long term, it will surely nip the person's inner curiosity and spirit of inquiry in the bud.
What is even more troublesome is that this pain is often justified.
Before words like "it can't be helped because it's for a living" or "everyone is enduring it," the discomfort in your heart is stifled.
However, no matter how many legitimate reasons you line up, when your heart is screaming "this is not what I want to do," we become alienated from ourselves little by little.
By trying to convince ourselves that other people's values and goals are our own, we even lose sight of what our true selves want.
It is like being made to walk earnestly on a map drawn by someone else.
Even if there is treasure ahead, it is difficult to find true joy in that journey.
✅ Summary
When we are driven by the engine of our own will, we shine with vitality and gain the power to enjoy even difficulties.
On the other hand, when we are moved by the whip of other people's voices, our steps become heavy and our hearts gradually wear down.
Spontaneity and externality.
These two motivations are competing in every aspect of our daily lives.
However, we cannot live in this world solely by our own will.
As a member of society and a member of a family, there are countless moments when we must respond to the demands and expectations of others.
The problem may not be to judge one or the other as absolute good or evil.
What is important is, even if the trigger is external, how can we find our own meaning in that act and re-weave our story?
For example, even an extrinsic motivation that seems like "working for the family" can change the landscape of work completely when it can be converted into your own strong will to "protect the smiles of the family I love."
Are we just puppets playing a given role?
Or can we become players who build a game with our own strategy, whatever cards we are dealt?
Which direction is the compass in your heart pointing now?
And how much are you able to feel the slight trembling of that needle every day?
