The Fear of Having to Be a 'Good Person'
"Be a good child." This may be a phrase you have heard countless times since you were young.
You want to meet your parents' expectations, be praised, and be loved.
Driven by such pure feelings, we have made repeated efforts to be a "good child."
However, at some point, those thoughts can become a heavy burden, turning into a "curse" that constricts the heart.
✅ Parental Expectations and the Curse of Being a "Good Child"
When we were young, seeing our parents smile was the most joyful thing of all.
When we got good grades on a test or worked hard to help out, seeing our parents happy taught us as children that "being a good child is a good thing."
And so, we began to unconsciously act the part of a "good child" to meet their expectations.
However, it is not easy to keep meeting parental expectations.
Days spent constantly reading our parents' faces and suppressing our true feelings.
At some point, being a "good child" becomes the goal itself, and we may lose sight of our true selves.
As we continue to wear the mask of a "good child," we lose track of who we really are and become tormented by suffering.
✅ The Anguish Brought by the Mask of a "Good Child"
The mask of a "good child" brings us various forms of anguish.
Because we are hiding our true selves, we are constantly plagued by feelings of emptiness and loss of self.
Furthermore, to remain a "good child," failure is not permitted.
As a result, we are constantly expected to be perfect, and we feel as though we are being crushed by the pressure.
Moreover, the mask of a "good child" hinders our connections with those around us.
Because we cannot show our true selves, it is difficult to build relationships based on genuine trust, making us prone to feeling lonely.
It is not uncommon for us to be unable to open up about our inner thoughts, leaving us to carry our worries and anxieties alone.
As a result, the more we try to be a "good child," the more we are drawn into a vortex of suffering.
✅ To Accept Your True Self
So, how can we be freed from the curse of being a "good child" and live as our true selves?
First, it is important to find a balance between meeting your parents' expectations and living your own life.
The desire to meet your parents' expectations is important, but this is, after all, your own life.
Please respect your own values and feelings, and do not give up on living as yourself.
It is also important to face past traumas and emotional wounds.
The obsession with having to be a "good child" may be rooted in past experiences.
By overcoming painful past experiences and healing yourself, you will be able to regain your inner freedom.
Finally, let's cultivate self-compassion.
Self-compassion means being kind and compassionate toward yourself.
We are all imperfect and have flaws. We all make mistakes and experience painful times.
At such times, instead of blaming yourself, let's gently say to yourself, "You did your best" or "It's tough, isn't it?"
When you are freed from the curse of being a "good child" and can live as your authentic self, the world will surely look different.
By loving and accepting yourself, you will be able to find true happiness and peace of mind.
✅ Summary
While the pressure to be a "good child" stems from a pure desire to meet parental expectations, it can also suppress your true self and make life feel difficult.
However, what is important is to take off that mask and accept yourself as you are.
Find a balance between parental expectations and your own authenticity, face your past traumas and emotional wounds, and pour kindness into yourself.
By doing so, you can be freed from the curse of being a "good child" and find true happiness and peace of mind.
If you feel you cannot carry it all alone, it is also important to seek help from trusted people or professional organizations.
You are not alone.
Do not rush; let's move forward one step at a time at your own pace.
