Water-Washed Rice
Have you ever heard of water-washed rice?
I believe it is a local dish from Yamagata, so I suspect people from other regions might not know about it.
Basically, it is like a water-based version of ochazuke, where you wash the rice with water during the hot summer months.
There are no toppings; you simply pour water over the rice.
Pickles are the classic side dish!
✅ Well water from my mother's family home
However, this was quite a feast for me during my elementary school days.
One of the secrets was that I ate it using the well water from my mother's family home.
Moreover, I would put the rice in a colander, crouch by the pond where the well water flowed out, dip the rice into the bottom, and wash it with the fresh, cold water before eating.
It felt great to eat outside, and the coldness of the well water made me forget the summer heat.
My own home also pumped up well water, but we didn't have a pond like that, so my mother's family home felt special.
There was a plum tree planted near that well, and I could enjoy plums in the autumn; it was a special place and time for me as an elementary school student.
✅ Grandma's aged pickles as a side dish
It is not as if we just shoveled this water-washed rice into our mouths without anything else.
We would always have the eggplant or cucumber pickles that my maternal grandmother had made placed on top of our rice, and we children would go to the well to eat by ourselves.
These aged pickles had a slight tang, and combined with the well water during the hot summer, they made it possible to eat plenty of rice in a refreshing way.
The taste of pickles changes significantly depending on who makes them, so my grandmother's pickles are etched into my life as the taste of my hometown.
This is not sold anywhere, and even when I tried to make it myself, it never tasted the same.
Thinking that I will never be able to taste it again makes my heart ache a little.
✅ Summary
After finishing lunch like this, I would spend my time as a country boy, running around catching insects and picking wildflowers with my siblings and cousins.
I wanted my own children to experience that too, but that well is gone now, and Grandma's pickles are no longer around.
All I can do is pass on the stories of what happened back then.
I realized once again that the life I have lived has been a happy one.
