The Story of a Man Who Had Never Seen the Sea
For a long time, my world was complete with nothing but red, round things.
The smell of soil, the sunlight scorching my skin, and the shadows of birds occasionally crossing the sky.
That was everything I knew of the world.
Ever since I could remember, I had lived without knowing what the sea was. I knew it on a map.
I knew the fact that it was blue, vast, and covered most of the Earth.
But my imagination was far too poor to grasp how deep that blue was, or how much that vastness could stir the heart.
✅ I was only good at growing tomatoes
I was born in a village tucked deep within a basin surrounded by mountains on all sides.
All I could see from here were the ridges of the mountain range and the sky reflecting the changing seasons.
The hustle and bustle of the city that young people dream of, or the seaside sunsets that lovers talk about, were pages that did not exist in the script of my life.
Even for our school trip, our school chose a hot spring resort in another prefecture, even deeper in the mountains.
From a prefecture without a sea to another prefecture without a sea.
It felt as if that symbolized the entirety of my youth.
As my classmates left the mountains one by one, I took over the fields.
One could say it was because I had no other skills, but strangely, I had no regrets.
Because I had my tomatoes.
I believe, even if I say so myself, that the tomatoes I grow are special.
The deep, black soil of my ancestral fields. The clear, cold snowmelt water drawn from the mountains.
And above all, the time and love I pour into them.
I carefully wipe each fruit wet with morning dew, prune the leaves to prevent disease, and train the vines so that the sunlight hits every fruit equally.
I didn't have many people to talk to, but the tomatoes responded honestly to my hard work.
The skin is thin yet has a bursting tension, and if you take one bite, a flood of sweetness and acidity spreads throughout your mouth.
Before I knew it, my tomatoes had become a bit of a brand at the local farmers' market as "Yamanaka's Tomatoes."
Eventually, that reputation crossed the mountains, and one day, a buyer named Iguchi came by in a light truck.
He was a man with a rugged, sun-tanned face. He picked up one of my tomatoes, examined it with a professional's stern eye, and then silently popped one into his mouth.
I still remember the moment his expression changed from surprise to admiration.
"Mr. Yamanaka, your tomatoes are the real deal. They would definitely hold their own at a top-tier restaurant in the city."
From that day on, my world expanded just a little bit.
Iguchi-san began coming to buy tomatoes regularly, and he told me that my tomatoes were gracing the plates of stylish restaurants in a city by the sea that I had never seen.
It was a story about a world I couldn't even imagine.
One summer day, as Iguchi-san was loading the boxes of tomatoes into his truck as usual, he suddenly said this:
"Mr. Yamanaka, why don't you come and see what kind of dishes your tomatoes are being turned into for once? There's a wonderful restaurant by the sea that I always supply to."
That invitation quietly stirred a small, dormant curiosity for the unknown deep within my heart.
✅ A stylish seaside restaurant
A few weeks later, I was riding in the car driven by Iguchi-san, heading toward that restaurant.
We passed through roads where the mountain greenery deepened and went through several tunnels.
Before long, I noticed that the density of the green in the scenery outside the window began to thin, and the sky felt strangely wide. And then, a scent I had never smelled before began to mix into the wind. A damp, salty fragrance.
"We're almost there."
At Iguchi-san's words, I found myself holding my breath without realizing it. The moment we rounded the final curve, it suddenly appeared before my eyes.
Blue. A world that was simply, purely blue spread out across the other side of the windshield.
Where the sky ended and the water's surface began, the boundary line seemed to melt and blur.
The horizon.
That single line I had only known from textbooks dominated my field of vision as an overwhelming reality.
The word 'big' wasn't enough.
It was far, unimaginably more vast than the sky I looked up at every day, and more vast than the mountain ranges where I was born and raised.
For the first time in my life, I realized how small my own existence was.
The restaurant stood quietly on a cliff overlooking that vast blue.
The glass-walled interior was filled with sunlight, and the tablecloths were dazzlingly white.
Feeling a bit intimidated, I was urged by Iguchi-san to take a seat.
Before long, a dish was brought out.
A caprese salad with vibrant red, green, and white beautifully arranged on a stark white plate.
The star was undoubtedly my tomato.
Thinly sliced, it shone like a jewel.
I timidly picked up my fork and brought it to my mouth.
The next moment, I was speechless.
Is this my tomato?
It is that taste I know.
However, something I didn't know had been added to it.
The milky richness of high-quality mozzarella cheese, the refreshing scent of basil, and the mellow flavor of what was likely top-tier olive oil were bringing out the sweetness and acidity of the tomato to the absolute limit.
The potential of the ingredients I had painstakingly grown had been perfectly unleashed by professional skill and sensibility.
I can only grow tomatoes.
But the chef at this restaurant can cast magic on those tomatoes.
This dish made me keenly aware that my work is by no means something that is completed by me alone.
After the meal, Iguchi-san called the chef over.
He introduced himself as Sena-san, a chef who was perhaps a little older than me, with a calm yet sharp gaze.
I couldn't help but stand up, reach out my calloused hand, and ask for a handshake.
"Thank you... for making my tomatoes taste this good."
The voice I squeezed out might have been trembling a little.
Sena-san shook my hand firmly and smiled.
"Thank you, too. Our restaurant exists because of Mr. Yamanaka's tomatoes. Please continue to provide us with those delicious tomatoes."
It was a moment where two craftsmen connected, not through words, but through mutual respect for each other's work.
✅ Tomatoes That Connect Smiles
Five days have passed since then.
My daily life remains unchanged.
I wake up with the dawn and go out to the field to tend to the tomatoes.
Yet, my world has changed decisively.
Today, too, the tomatoes bathed in the morning sun are shining in the field like rubies.
If it were the old me, I would have just been satisfied with their color and luster, thinking they were a good crop.
But now, beyond these red fruits, I can see that vast blue sea, an artistic dish on a white plate, and the face of some stranger who will likely break into a smile upon tasting it.
I get covered in dirt and sweat here.
That labor crosses mountains and seas, connecting to someone's special day.
The tomatoes I grew are being worked into magic by Sena-san's hands, creating smiles for someone.
Now that I truly feel that connection, my work has taken on a meaning beyond just a way to make a living.
I likely will never leave these mountains.
I cannot even imagine myself living in a seaside town.
My place is here on this soil.
However, I am no longer living in a closed-off world.
Because these red fruits I produce are a certain bridge connecting me to a world I do not know.
Suddenly, I carefully detached one ripe fruit from its branch.
The weight of it in my palm felt substantial.
I felt it was more than just the weight of a tomato.
It was the weight of a small happiness born in the corner of a restaurant in a distant city.
I closed my eyes quietly, as if to savor that weight.
What does it really mean to know the world?
Is it to visit many different places?
Or is it to be able to think of someone far away from the place where you are now?
I have yet to find the answer.
