How People Live When Their Hearts and Actions Are Out of Sync
There is someone you want to help.
There is someone you are grateful to.
But for some reason, the timing never seems right, and you cannot translate those feelings into action.
I imagine everyone has had an experience like that.
In your heart, you have already decided.
You want to act right now.
Yet, reality does not allow it.
It is a sensation where your heart, your feelings, and your actions are slowly drifting apart.
I encounter such moments from time to time.
Strangely enough, this kind of misalignment never happens when you don't care about the other person.
It is actually the opposite.
It is precisely because you truly care about them that you suffer from being unable to act.
Today, I would like to think deeply about that gap between the heart and action.
✅ The frustration of wanting to respond but being unable to
I am truly grateful to that person.
In my heart, I know that clearly.
But because of my own inadequacy, I cannot easily respond to them.
There are certainly times like that.
This is incredibly frustrating.
It is agonizing.
Even though my mind knows I should act right now, my body and the situation will not allow it.
It feels as if my heart and body are in different places.
My heart is already reaching out to the other person, but my body is left behind on this side.
That is the kind of frustration it is.
At times like this, people tend to blame themselves.
Why can't I act? Why is the timing never right?
They count up their lack of ability, lack of preparation, and lack of decisiveness one by one, cornering themselves.
But in reality, timing is not something you can control solely by your own will.
Work commitments, family circumstances, physical health, and relationships with those around you—many things are intricately intertwined to shape who you are at this very moment.
Behind every single decision lies a pile of invisible circumstances.
This is not about being selfish; it is the reality that your existence carries.
Perhaps, then, there is no need to blame yourself too much for being unable to act.
However, I do not want to pretend that this frustration does not exist.
It might be easier to conveniently forget it, but living without feeling that pain feels like losing something in the process.
I want to properly feel what I should feel.
Because that frustration is also proof of how much you truly care about that person.
✅ There are things that can only be found by struggling
So, what should you do in such times?
Honestly, I have not found the answer yet either.
No matter how many years you live, perhaps there is no correct answer to these situations.
But one thing I can say is that you have no choice but to struggle.
Look for what you can do.
Even the smallest thing is fine.
Make one phone call.
Send a short message.
Make a little bit of time.
It does not have to be the perfect timing, and it does not have to be the perfect action.
In fact, while you are searching for perfection, time just keeps slipping away.
In that case, it is better to take a small, imperfect step that you can take right now.
Just try to do something.
I think there is meaning in that attitude itself.
It is easy to say, "It is fate, so it cannot be helped."
If you say that, you don't have to blame yourself, and you can feel relieved.
But what if, because the timing was off, your relationship with that person truly ends?
For that person, it is like a part of their life quietly coming to an end.
It is not something to be treated lightly.
The bonds between people are more fragile than you think.
If time passes while you remain out of sync, there are times when things will never return to how they were.
That is precisely why I do not want to dismiss it easily as "it cannot be helped."
Struggle.
Flail.
It does not matter if it looks uncool.
Even if it does not go well, keep piling up small actions.
That might be the only thing you can do.
And no one knows what awaits after you have struggled.
Perhaps you might not make it in time after all.
Even so, the fact that you struggled will remain within you.
The regret of having done nothing and the regret of having struggled to the end have completely different weights.
That is what I believe.
✅ Trying hard, holding on, and giving up. Still, we keep living
I think life is about repeating the process of trying hard, holding on, and sometimes giving up.
Not everything can be neatly resolved.
There are times when you want to act but cannot, and times when you act but are too late.
Even while carrying a regret, the next day still comes.
There will be encounters with someone new.
That is how people live, piling up one imperfect choice after another.
Even if there were a "path of only correct choices" in life, I suspect it would feel somewhat fake and not very rich in flavor.
Even so, each of those struggles might be what moves us forward, little by little.
Even if things did not go well, there must have been meaning in that process.
Even if you cannot see it right now, when you look back later, there will surely come a moment when you can think that you are who you are today because of the struggles you went through back then.
If there is someone in your heart right now whom you want to help but cannot because the timing is off,
I hope you will try to find just one thing you can do today, while still carrying that frustration.
It does not have to be anything grand.
Just one word, just one action is enough.
What kind of results that small step will lead to someday.
That is something you cannot know yet.
However, the simple fact that you struggled will surely support you in the future.
