Leveling the ground of the heart, that is training
The moment you decide to try something new, another version of yourself pops up from the back of your mind, heckling you with things like, "It's a waste of time anyway" or "There's no way you can do that."
Have you ever experienced that?
Your hard-earned motivation hits that invisible obstacle and rolls off in the wrong direction.
But it's okay.
If you level and clear the ground of your heart beforehand, before those heckles can be heard, the things you want to do will roll along surprisingly smoothly.
✅ Everyone has preconceived notions, right?
My heart used to be a terribly bumpy road.
No, rather than a road, it might be more accurate to call it a wasteland, with stones of all sizes rolling around.
The true nature of those stones is "preconceived notions." "A man should be like this," "A father must have dignity," "Family is something you endure."
Growing up in a household dominated by an alcoholic father, I had accumulated many such distorted stones in my heart without even realizing it.
Because that was the common sense of the world and the "norm" for my family, I didn't even think to question it.
That's why life was always difficult.
On a bumpy road, it's hard even to walk straight.
If you try to run even a little, you immediately trip and fall.
It might be no wonder that I was struck one after another by illnesses like Graves' disease, depression, and panic disorder.
I had tried desperately to keep running while carrying a bumpy heart, and as a result, I fell spectacularly.
The turning point was meeting my wife.
The "norm" that she and her family showed me was completely different from my own.
A father and daughter laughing together like friends.
That scene, so calm and warm, was a shock that shook the wasteland of my heart to its foundations.
"Oh, so such a flat road existed."
That was the first time I realized how steep and bumpy the road I was standing on really was.
In everyone's heart, to a greater or lesser extent, stones called "preconceived notions" are rolling around.
The important thing is to first notice their existence.
✅ The real thrill of moving what you've thought of
Once I realized my heart was bumpy, I began the steady work of "leveling the ground."
I read many books, received counseling, and faced my inner self.
It was like the work of carefully removing, one by one, the stones rolling around in the wasteland of my heart.
Removing stones that had hardened over many years was by no means easy.
However, little by little, surely, my heart became flatter and softer.
Once the heart is leveled, the world changes completely.
It was the same when my wife decided to pursue her career dreams and take a job far away.
If I had my old, bumpy heart, I would have surely stumbled over stones like "A man should protect the home" or "It looks bad to society," and been unable to move.
But on a heart that had been leveled flat, a new idea rolled along without any resistance: "Alright, let's support my wife's dream. It's my turn to become a super house-husband and protect this home."
The triple task of solo parenting, work, and caregiving.
From the outside, it might have looked like a difficult situation, but for me, it was like an exciting game of moving the pieces of a new life on a flat heart.
Salesman, graphic designer, and house-husband.
The reason I was able to move lightly between these many roles was because I had long since removed the old stone that said, "You should master one thing."
Even the "demon persistence" of updating my note every day for over 1000 days—if my heart had been bumpy, I would have fallen into the hole called "quitting after three days."
Moving what you think, just as you think it.
This pleasure and thrill can never be tasted unless the heart is flat.
✅ Summary
Leveling the heart is not something you do once and then you're finished.
If you leave it alone, weeds like "It's impossible anyway" or "It's a hassle" will grow before you know it.
Therefore, I think this is a daily training and maintenance.
Is my heart flat today? Are there any strange stones rolling around somewhere?
If I feel a little bump, I take a deep breath, correct my thinking habits, and make it flat again.
That is by no means an ascetic practice. It is a truly fun warm-up exercise for rolling the things you want to do, to the places you want to go, freely on the field called life.
Come on, why don't you start by taking a good look at the land of your own heart? While imagining what kind of interesting things you might be able to roll there.
